How to Start a Gas Furnace

Your gas furnace is an essential part of your home’s heating system, providing you warmth and comfort during the cold winter months. It is important to know how to start it correctly and ensure that it stays functional. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to start your gas furnace safely and efficiently.

1. Read the manual: Every gas furnace will have a specific set of instructions unique to its model. Before doing anything else, go through the manufacturer’s manual thoroughly in order to understand your furnace’s components and the correct way to operate it.

2. Turn off the thermostat: Prior to starting your furnace, make sure your thermostat is turned off. This helps ensure that when you turn it back on, the system resets properly.

3. Locate the gas valve: Find your furnace’s gas valve which should be located near the main unit. Identify its three settings – ON, OFF, and PILOT.

4. Switch off the gas valve: Turn the gas valve to its OFF position, ensuring that there is no flow of gas before you continue with the process.

5. Wait for a few minutes: Give any gas remnants some time (around 10 minutes) to dissipate from around your furnace before moving onto the next step.

6. Set the gas valve to PILOT mode: Turn the lever of the gas valve towards PILOT (do not turn the valve all the way on). This allows you to ignite a small pilot flame without triggering full power ignition.

7. Ignite the pilot light: Hold down or press a button (depending on your specific furnace model) dedicated for igniting a pilot light. You should see a small blue flame near or around the burner tubes – this means that your pilot light has been ignited successfully.

8. Hold down ignition button/switch: Keep holding down or pressing your ignition button/switch for about 20-30 seconds, allowing the pilot light to heat the thermocouple. A thermocouple is a safety device designed to detect whether the pilot light is lit before allowing the main gas flow.

9. Set the valve to ON: Release the internal pressure by turning the gas valve all the way to its ON position, ensuring that the main burner flames ignite and start heating up the furnace.

10. Turn on your thermostat: Set your thermostat to your desired temperature, and ensure that you have set it into HEAT mode. The system should now turn on and begin warming up your home.

11. Monitor your furnace: Check for any unusual noises or odors coming from your furnace throughout this process. If you notice anything out of place, turn off the system immediately and contact a professional.

Congratulations! You have successfully started your gas furnace. Ensure you monitor its performance regularly and carry out routine maintenance to guarantee its long-term efficiency and safe operation.
