Sneezing is a natural reflex that helps to expel irritants and free the respiratory system of mucus, pollen, or other particles. While sneezing is a common event, it’s essential to know the proper way to sneeze to avoid spreading germs. Here are 9 steps to ensure you sneeze properly and maintain good hygiene.

1. Prepare yourself

When you feel a sneeze coming on, stop what you’re doing and make sure you have adequate tissues or a clean cloth nearby.

2. Use a tissue or handkerchief

To minimize the spread of germs, cover your nose and mouth using a tissue or handkerchief when you sneeze. Make sure it completely covers both your nose and mouth.

3. Position your arm and elbow

If tissues or a handkerchief are not available, sneeze into the crook of your elbow. This helps keep germs from spreading onto your hands, reducing the likelihood of transmission to others.

4. Turn away from others

When preparing to sneeze, turn away from those around you as an added measure to prevent spreading germs.

5. Close your eyes

As a natural reflex during sneezing, it is common for people to close their eyes. This helps protect them from any expelled particles.

6. Release the sneeze

Allow the full force of the sneeze to be released while keeping your mouth and nose covered with the tissue or handkerchief. If using your elbow, maintain it in place throughout the sneeze.

7. Dispose of used tissues properly

After you’ve sneezed into a tissue, fold it up and promptly dispose of it in a waste bin. Avoid leaving used tissues lying around as they can spread germs.

8. Wash your hands

Immediately following a sneeze, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If handwashing is not an option, use hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.

9. Keep surfaces clean

Regularly disinfect surfaces that you come into contact with during and after sneezing to reduce the spread of germs.

By following these 9 steps, you can ensure that you’re sneezing properly and taking the necessary precautions to maintain good hygiene and protect the health of those around you.
