Introduction:

Skanking is a lively dance style that originated in the 1950s and gained popularity in the 1970s, particularly among fans of ska and punk music. This unique dance moves can be found at ska, punk, and reggae shows worldwide. If you want to join in the fun at your next live music event, follow these eight simple steps to learn how to skank with ease.

Step 1: Find your rhythm

First and foremost, skanking requires an enthusiastic attitude and an openness to finding your own personal style. Begin by simply tapping your feet to the beat of the music. Focus on the upbeat rather than the downbeat for an authentic skanking experience.

Step 2: Bend your knees

As you tap your feet along to the beat, start bending your knees slightly to loosen up your lower body. Make sure you maintain a slight bounce in your stance for a more energetic dance move.

Step 3: Step forward and backward

Once you are comfortable with bending your knees, introduce alternating steps forward and backward into your movements. Starting with one foot, step forward on the upbeat, then bring it back to meet the other foot as you step backward.

Step 4: Kick outwards

After mastering steps forward and backward, add more drama by kicking one leg out as you step forward with the other foot. Balance yourself by using your arms – swinging them in opposition to your legs will help provide stability.

Step 5: Add energy

As you get comfortable with skanking basics, add energy by increasing the force of your kicks and steps. The objective is to let loose and have fun while staying in time with the beat.

Step 6: Vary your leg movements

Add variety to your skanking moves by incorporating different leg movements into your routine, like high kicks or shuffling side-to-side steps.

Step 7: Move your upper body

Now that your lower body is confidently skanking, add some movement to your upper body. Move your shoulders, head, and arms in time with the music. Freestyle movements like pumping your fist or clapping along with the beat are also great ways to express yourself.

Step 8: Practice and have fun

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, keep practicing your skanking moves and have fun! Remember that skanking is about enjoying the music and creating a sense of community on the dance floor. So let loose, let your instincts guide you, and don’t be afraid to make the moves your own.

In conclusion:

These eight steps should give you a solid foundation for learning how to skank. Remember that the key to successful skanking is staying true to yourself – and having as much fun as possible! Once you’ve become confident in your moves, take them back to the next live show and dance the night away with your fellow ska enthusiasts.
