How to Share Instagram Posts, Reels, and Stories with Close Friends Only
Instagram offers various ways to share content, such as posts, reels, and stories, with a more selective audience through its “Close Friends” feature. This allows users to create a curated list of followers with whom they can share more personal content without broadcasting it to everyone. Here’s how you can use this feature to your advantage.
Firstly, create your Close Friends list by going to your profile and tapping on the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner. Select ‘Close Friends’ and begin adding people you want on this list by searching for their names or scrolling through suggestions.
For sharing a story with Close Friends only, start crafting your story by capturing or uploading content as you normally would. Before posting, you’ll notice the option to ‘Share with…’ at the bottom of the screen. Tap on it and choose ‘Close Friends’. Your story will now be visible only to people on that list, indicated by a green ring around your profile picture.
When posting a regular Instagram post (photo or video) that you want to share only with your Close Friends, you will need to get a bit creative. Instagram does not currently offer direct functionality to restrict regular posts to Close Friends the same way it does for stories. However, users commonly work around this limitation by sharing the post as part of their story visible only to their Close Friends list. This can be done by selecting the paper airplane button below the post and then choosing ‘Add post to your story’. Finally, ensure that it is shared with just your Close Friends by selecting that option before posting.
Sharing reels with Close Friends can also follow a similar workaround method used for regular posts. Create your reel and before sharing it on your feed or in stories, ensure it mirrors the same privacy settings preferred for personal reels distribution.
Additionally, consider using Direct Messages (DMs) to send posts or reels exclusively to individuals or groups within your Close Friends list.
Remember that the Close Friends list can be edited at any time and content shared with them will not be visible to anyone not included in this group. This makes it easier for users who want to maintain their privacy while still engaging with a select audience on Instagram.
