An infinity dress is a versatile and stylish piece of clothing that can be worn in numerous ways, making it a must-have addition for any wardrobe. In this article, we’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of sewing your very own infinity dress.

1. Gather your materials:

– Fabric (4 yards of stretchy material)

– Matching thread

– Measuring tape

– Scissors

– Sewing machine or needle and thread

– Pins

2. Measure and cut the fabric:

Measure your waist, length from waist to floor, and desired strap length. Multiply the waist measurement by 1.5 and add 2 inches for seam allowance. Cut a large rectangle for the skirt, using the waist measurement and length from waist to floor.

3. Hem the skirt:

Fold the bottom edge of the skirt over ½ inch twice and pin down. Sew a straight stitch along the pinned edge to create a hem.

4. Create a waistband/gathering:

Take the top edge of the skirt fabric, fold it over 1 inch, and pin down. Sew along the pinned edge to form a casing, leaving a small opening to insert elastic later.

5. Measure and cut straps:

Cut two long pieces of fabric for straps using your desired strap length (suggestion: 9 inches wide by at least 70-80 inches long).

6. Hem strap edges:

Fold all edges of both straps inwards approximately ½ inch, pin down, and sew with a straight stitch along each side.

7. Attach straps to skirt:

Find the center point at the top of the skirt’s front side (waistband). Pin each strap approximately 3 inches apart with equal parts hanging on each side of the center point, placing one end of each strap on top of the other with both right sides facing up.

8. Sew straps to skirt:

Sew a straight stitch to secure the straps’ ends to the skirt, making sure to sew through both layers of the fabric.

9. Insert elastic into waistband:

Using a safety pin attached to a piece of ¼-inch wide elastic (cut to your waist measurement), thread the elastic through the waistband casing. Sew both ends of the elastic together once it’s threaded completely through.

10. Close waistband opening:

Pull gently on the elastic to make sure it’s evenly distributed within the waistband. Sew the open section of the casing closed, ensuring not to sew through the elastic.

11. Create an optional sash:

For added detail, you can create a sash by cutting a long strip of fabric (6 inches wide and at least 70-80 inches long) and folding it in half lengthwise with right sides together. Sew along both long edges, flip inside-out, and position as desired around your waist when wearing your infinity dress.

12. Style your infinity dress:

Now that you’ve successfully sewn your very own infinity dress, you can experiment with various ways to wear it – as a halter, one-shoulder, off-the-shoulder, or even strapless.

Congratulations on completing your DIY infinity dress! It’s now time to show off your unique creation and wear this versatile piece in multiple styles for different occasions.
