How to Sew a Fly Zipper

Fly zippers are an essential component of pants, skirts, and other garments that require a clean, concealed closure. While sewing a fly zipper may seem challenging, it becomes simpler with practice and patience. In this article, we will walk you through the process of sewing a fly zipper step by step.
Materials Required:
1. A fly zipper (preferably 1-2 inches longer than the opening)
2. Fabric for your garment (with the center front seam allowance marked for the zipper)
3. Sewing machine
4. Matching thread
5. Pins or Wonder Clips
6. Fabric scissors
7. Zipper foot for your sewing machine
Step 1: Prepare the Garment
First, you need to stitch the garment’s center front seam up to the point where the zipper will start. Finish both seam allowances using a serger or zig-zag stitch.
Step 2: Install the Zipper Fly
Position your fly zipper right side down along the seam allowance on one side of your fabric, aligning the zipper tape with the raw edge of the allowance. Secure with pins or Wonder Clips. Using a straight stitch and your zipper foot, sew along one side of the zipper tape.
Step 3: Topstitch Along One Side
Fold your fabric back so that only your zipper is exposed with the right side facing upwards now. Topstitch along this side of your zipper about ⅛ inch away from the seam line, ensuring you’re stitching though both your fabric and zipper tape.
Step 4: Create a Fly Shield
To sew a fly shield, take a strip of fabric about 2-inches wide and long enough to cover your entire zipper length when folded in half lengthwise. Fold it in half lengthwise, right sides facing each other and sew along both short ends at a ¼-inch seam allowance. Turn it right side out, press and topstitch the edges.
Step 5: Attach the Fly Shield
Place the unsewn edge of your fly shield on top of the free zipper tape, aligning it with the garment’s raw edge. Stitch through all layers close to the zipper teeth using your zipper foot.
Step 6: Joining Both Sides
On the right side of your garment, slide a pin horizontally through your fabric and both layers of the zipper at the base. Unzip the zipper halfway down, and pin or clip both seam allowances together with the pin still in place. Sew a line joining both sides through all layers around ½-inch away from your center front seam.
Step 7: Topstitch
Press and fold your garment so that only a small part of your fly shield is visible, holding it in place with pins if necessary. On the right side of the fabric, topstitch around the curved edge to create a graceful curve extending towards your waistband.
Congratulations! You have successfully sewn a fly zipper. With practice, this process will become even smoother and easier. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different zippers for various garment styles – happy sewing!
