Using a handsaw is an essential skill for any DIY enthusiast. It allows you to make clean, precise cuts while working on various woodworking projects. This article will guide you through the process of sawing wood with a handsaw in 9 simple steps.

.Choose the right handsaw: Select a handsaw that matches the type of cut and wood you’re working with. Rip saws are suitable for cutting along the grain, while crosscut saws are best for cutting across the grain.

.Prepare the wood: Before you start cutting, make sure your wood is securely clamped or otherwise held in place. Mark the line you’ll be cutting along with a pencil or chalk and a straight edge.

.Position yourself: Stand comfortably with your feet shoulder-width apart, facing the wood at approximately a 45-degree angle.

.Secure grip on the saw: Hold the handle of the saw with your dominant hand, wrapping your thumb and fingers around it securely. Your index finger should point along the blade, helping to guide the cut.

.Position your other hand: Place your non-dominant hand on top of the plank closest to its edge, holding it parallel to your face and away from the saw blade. Keep fingers slightly curved and apply gentle downward pressure to stabilize the wood.

.Make a starting groove: To begin cutting, lightly pull back on the saw, aiming to create a shallow groove long your marked line. This notch will help guide your first few strokes.

.Cut at an angle: Instead of cutting straight down into the wood, use a slight back-and-forth motion from elbow and shoulder joints, positioning your blade at an angle between 45-60 degrees. This angled approach makes it easier to control the cuts’ path and reduces chances of blade getting stuck.

.Focus on smooth strokes: As you saw, maintain consistent pressure and motion, keeping your strokes smooth and steady. Allow the teeth of the blade to do the work, rather than applying excessive force.

.Finish the cut: When you approach the end of your cut, slow down your strokes and lighten your pressure to prevent any splintering or chipping of the wood. Once complete, carefully remove the saw from the cut and examine your work for accuracy.

By following these 9 simple steps, you’ll be able to saw wood with a handsaw skillfully and confidently. With practice and attention to detail, cutting wood by hand can become an enjoyable and valuable part of your woodworking repertoire.
