Every relationship, whether it’s with a loved one, friend, or coworker, is bound to experience disagreements. These arguments can be a source of stress and emotional turmoil if left unresolved. Follow these 14 steps to work towards resolving your arguments and finding common ground.

1. Remain calm: Keep your emotions in check and avoid responding with anger or frustration to prevent further escalation.

2. Reflect on your feelings: Before addressing the issue, take time to understand what triggered your reaction and assess whether it is rational.

3. Don’t interrupt: Give the other person time to express their side without any interruptions or distractions.

4. Show empathy: Make an effort to understand the other person’s perspective and validate their feelings.

5. Apologize if necessary: If you’ve made a mistake or contributed to the argument, take responsibility and apologize for your actions.

6. Maintain eye contact: This nonverbal cue shows sincerity, attentiveness, and respect for the other person.

7. Use “I” statements: Instead of using accusatory language, frame your thoughts using “I” statements to express how you feel without assigning blame.

8. Identify the issue at hand: Clarify the subject of disagreement so both parties have a clear understanding of the discussion.

9. Listen actively: Pay attention not only to the words being spoken but also to their underlying meaning and emotions behind them.

10. Seek common ground: Recognize areas where you agree and focus on shared goals or concerns.

11. Offer potential solutions: Collaboratively brainstorm ways to reach a resolution that benefits both parties involved.

12. Determine boundaries: Consider setting boundaries for future interactions if necessary, in order to address unresolved issues proactively.

13. Agree on a plan of action: Once you have discussed potential solutions, commit to an actionable plan moving forward.

14. Let go and move on: Once the argument has been resolved, avoid dwelling on the past and focus on nurturing a renewed sense of understanding and growth in your relationship.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-equipped to resolve arguments effectively while maintaining strong and respectful relationships. Remember that disagreements are natural in any relationship, and learning how to navigate them will ultimately increase your communication skills and deepen the bond between you and those around you.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
