How to Remove Tartar: 10 Steps

1. Brush your teeth properly

To effectively remove tartar, brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day. Use a fluoride toothpaste and an electric toothbrush with a small head, which can help remove plaque more efficiently.

2. Floss daily

Flossing every day is essential to eliminate food particles and plaque between teeth that brushing alone cannot reach. Be gentle but thorough, and consider using pre-threaded flossers or dental picks to make the process quicker and easier.

3. Use tartar-control toothpaste

Some types of toothpaste are formulated specifically to help break down plaque and prevent tartar buildup. Look for products containing pyrophosphates or zinc citrate, which are proven effective at fighting tartar.

4. Rinse with mouthwash

Antiseptic mouthwash can kill bacteria that cause plaque and reduce its accumulation on teeth. Swish a capful of mouthwash around in your mouth for 30 seconds after brushing, then spit it out without rinsing with water.

5. Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables

Consuming crisp, fibrous fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and celery can act as natural toothbrushes, scraping off plaque as you chew.

6. Limit sugary foods and beverages

Sugary treats cause a reaction in your mouth that leads to plaque formation, so reducing sugar consumption helps prevent tartar buildup. Switch to sugar-free alternatives where possible and drink plenty of water instead of sugary sodas.

7. Quit smoking

Tobacco use increases the risk of developing tartar deposits on teeth as it weakens the immune system and supports bacterial growth. Quitting smoking improves oral health and reduces tartar buildup over time.

8. Drink green tea

Green tea contains antioxidants called catechins that can help fight bacteria responsible for plaque accumulation. Incorporate 1-2 cups of green tea into your daily routine to enjoy its tartar-fighting benefits.

9. Use a scraper

Invest in a quality tongue scraper to remove bacteria from your tongue that could contribute to plaque formation. Gently scrape the surface of your tongue from back to front after brushing your teeth.

10. Schedule regular dental cleanings

Dentists have special tools to remove hardened tartar deposits that routine brushing and flossing cannot remove. Be sure to schedule professional dental cleanings at least twice a year for optimal oral health.

Following these ten steps will help you effectively remove tartar and maintain good dental hygiene. Remember, preventative measures are the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy and avoid costly dental procedures in the future.
