Removing floor tiles can be a messy and time-consuming task, but with the right tools and techniques, you can achieve excellent results. Follow these 14 steps to remove floor tiles efficiently and safely.

1. Gather your supplies: You’ll need a chisel, hammer, scraper, safety goggles, gloves, and hearing protection.

2. Ensure safety: Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and work gloves to protect your hands from sharp tile edges. Use hearing protection when using power tools.

3. Clear the area: Remove any furniture or obstacles from the room before starting.

4. Locate the edge: Start at the edge of the floor tile closest to a wall or other fixed boundary to make it easier to begin.

5. Test for asbestos: If your tiles were installed before the 1980s, they may contain asbestos, which is harmful if inhaled. Have them tested by a professional before attempting removal.

6. Loosen grout: Use a grout remover tool or utility knife to scrape away grout surrounding the tiles you’re removing. This will make it easier to get underneath them with your tools.

7. Tap chisel with a hammer: Place your chisel at an angle on the edge of the tile and give it a few firm taps with a hammer to break up the adhesive underneath.

8. Pry up tile: Once you’ve cracked the adhesive under a corner of the tile, slide your scraper or pry bar underneath and continue tapping with your hammer until you can lift up the entire tile.

9. Scrape away remaining adhesive: After removing each tile, use your scraper to clear away any remaining adhesive so that you have a clean surface for new flooring.

10. Remove large tiles in sections: If you’re dealing with larger tiles (such as 12-inch by 12-inch), it’s best to break them into sections before prying them up to minimize damage to the surrounding floor.

11. Assess underlying damage: After all the tiles are removed, check for any damage to the subfloor or underlayment. If there are issues, address them before installing new flooring.

12. Clean the surface: Sweep up and vacuum any debris left from the tile removal process. You’ll need a clean surface for installing new flooring.

13. Dispose of old tiles responsibly: Depending on your local regulations, you may need to take the old tiles to a specific disposal facility or arrange for special pickup services.

14. Install new flooring: With your surface prepared and free of debris, you’re ready to install your new flooring material.

By following these 14 steps and using proper protective equipment, you can successfully remove your old floor tiles and prepare for a fresh new look in your space.
