How to Read Runes: 15 Steps

Introduction:

Reading runes is an ancient practice that can provide insight and guidance to those who practice it. These symbols were used by Germanic tribes for writing, divination, and magical purposes. This article will help you learn how to read runes in 15 easy steps.

Step 1: Understand the basics of runes

Before you start reading runes, familiarize yourself with the Runic alphabet. Known as the Elder Futhark, this alphabet consists of 24 unique symbols that represent various sounds and meanings.

Step 2: Choose a rune set

A rune set typically includes 24 stones or small pieces of wood that are carved with the different runic symbols. You can purchase a ready-made set or create your own set by carving or painting the symbols onto your preferred medium.

Step 3: Cleanse your rune set

Before using your runes, cleanse them with sage, sunlight, or any other method you prefer to remove any negative energy from previous users or environments.

Step 4: Create a quiet space

Find a quiet space where you feel comfortable and relaxed. This will help you focus on properly interpreting the runes.

Step 5: Develop a clear and specific question

Formulate a clear question or intention before drawing any runes. The more specific your query, the more focused your reading will be.

Step 6: Choose a rune layout or spread

There are various layouts for rune readings like the simple one-rune draw or more complex layouts like the three-rune draw that represent past-present-future or mind-body-spirit. Select a layout that best suits your question.

Step 7: Draw the runes

Hold your rune bag and concentrate on your question as you draw one rune at a time and place them in your chosen layout.

Step 8: Focus on each rune individually

Look at each rune’s position in the layout and take note of its orientation. If a rune is upside down, it is considered reversed and may hold a different meaning

Step 9: Make note of combinations

After focusing on each individual rune, pay attention to their combinations in the layout. Combined runes can sometimes modify or enhance the meaning of one another.

Step 10: Interpret the runes

Using a guidebook or your intuition as a reference, interpret the meaning of each rune in your layout. Don’t forget to consider their positions within the spread.

Step 11: Reflect on your reading

Take time to meditate on your reading and consider how the interpretations relate to your question or situation.

Step 12: Record your readings

Keep track of the readings you do by writing them down in a journal. This can help with tracking patterns over time or gaining further insight later on.

Step 13: Practice regularly

The more you practice reading runes, the more intuitive and skilled you’ll become in interpreting their meanings. Plan to read runes regularly for both yourself and others.

Step 14: Trust your intuition

Develop a strong connection with your intuition when interpreting runes. The symbols have underlying meanings, but personal intuition plays an important role in connecting the dots.

Step 15: Never stop learning

Continuously deepen your understanding of runes by studying their history, symbolism, and various interpretations suggested by experts.

Conclusion:

Reading runes is an ancient art that offers wisdom and guidance if you’re willing to learn and practice. By following these 15 steps, you’ll be well on your way to mastering this powerful divination method.
