How to Put On a Bicycle Chain: 15 Steps
Step 1: Gather Materials
You will need a new bicycle chain, chain tool, degreaser, lubricant, and a clean work area.
Step 2: Remove the Old Chain
Remove the old bicycle chain using the chain tool to break the chain’s link. Ensure that you don’t lose any small parts when removing the old chain.
Step 3: Clean and Inspect the Drivetrain
Use degreaser and a cloth to clean the drivetrain components such as chainrings, derailleur, and cassette. Inspect them for any wear or damage.
Step 4: Measure the New Chain
Compare the new chain length with the old one. Adjust it according to your bicycle by removing or adding links. Ensure that it is the proper length for your bike’s gearing.
Step 5: Thread the New Chain
Starting at the rear cassette, thread the new chain through both derailleurs while ensuring it sits securely on each gear.
Step 6: Route Through Rear Derailleur
Route the new bicycle chain through the rear derailleur cage while following its intended path.
Step 7: Route Through Front Derailleur
Feed the chain through the front derailleur and over your chosen front chainring.
Step 8: Check Alignment
Double-check that your new bicycle chain aligns correctly on all gears and pulleys to ensure smooth shifting.
Step 9: Connect Chain Ends
Bring both ends of your new bike chain together, ensuring there are no twists or kinks in it.
Step 10: Insert Connecting Pin
Using your chain tool, insert a connecting pin into both ends of your bicycle chain so they can join together securely.
Step 11: Press Pin into Place
Gently press down on a protective surface to force your connecting pin until it is flush with both sides of your bicycle chain.
Step 12: Check Chain Flexibility
Ensure that your new bicycle chain can move freely around all gears and through both derailleurs without any binding or resistance.
Step 13: Lubricate the New Chain
Apply a generous amount of chain lubricant along the entire chain and cycle the gears several times to evenly distribute the lubricant.
Step 14: Wipe Excess Lubricant
Use a clean cloth to remove any excess lubricant from around the bicycle chain, avoiding any accumulation on the gears or pulleys.
Step 15: Test Ride
Finally, take your bicycle for a test ride to ensure everything is functioning smoothly and that your new bike chain is properly installed. Adjust if necessary.
