Understanding the concept of absolute values is vital for tackling algebraic equations and evaluating various mathematical expressions. The absolute value of a number is the distance from zero on the number line, always denoted as a positive value or zero. In this article, we will guide you through the process of entering absolute values into your calculator.

1. Choose your calculator:

Before we begin, it’s important to mention that different calculators can have different approaches to calculating the absolute value. Here, we will demonstrate how to enter absolute values on three common types of calculators: scientific, graphing, and online calculators.

2. Scientific Calculator (e.g., Casio fx-115ES):

a. Turn on your calculator.

b. Locate the “ABS” or “| |” button (the notation may differ among models).

c. Enter the number whose absolute value you want to find.

d. Press “SHIFT” followed by the “ABS/| |” button.

e. The result displayed will be the absolute value of your entered number.

3. Graphing Calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE):

a. Switch on your graphing calculator.

b. Press the “MATH” button.

c. Scroll down using arrow keys to find “num,” which stands for numerical functions.

d. Choose “#1: abs(” option and press “ENTER.”

e. Input the number whose absolute value you want to compute, between the parentheses.

f. Close parentheses and then press “ENTER” once more.

g. Your calculator will produce the absolute value of your entered number.

4. Online Calculator:

Using an online calculator differs slightly from using a physical calculator but remains simple:

a. Access an online calculator website (e.g., desmos.com or wolframalpha.com).

b-1 Desmos:

i. Type in the “abs(“.

ii. Enter your desired number.

iii. Close the parentheses and press “Enter.”

iv. The absolute value will appear on the graph, and the numeric output is displayed on the left-hand side of your screen.

b-2 WolframAlpha:

i. Type “abs(” and input your number.

ii. Close parentheses and press “Enter.”

iii. The result displayed will be the absolute value of the entered number.

Now that you’ve learned how to insert absolute values into various types of calculators, you’re all set to tackle equations and expressions wherein absolute values come into play. Mastering this skill sophisticates your problem-solving capabilities in a wide range of mathematical disciplines!
