Pumping your own gas can be a little intimidating, especially if it’s your first time. However, it’s a simple skill to master once you know the steps involved. Below, we’ve outlined 12 steps to help you pump your own gas like a pro.

1. Park close to the pump: When you arrive at the gas station, choose a pump that is on the same side as your gas tank. Park close enough so that the hose can easily reach your car.

2. Turn off your engine: Before pumping any gas, make sure to turn off your engine and remove the key from the ignition. This will prevent any possible fires or other damage.

3. Choose the grade of gasoline: Check your vehicle owner’s manual to determine the recommended octane level for your car. Most cars will run on regular gasoline, but some may require premium or a specific octane level.

4. Grab some gloves or paper towels: To avoid getting gasoline on your hands, grab disposable gloves or paper towels provided by most gas stations.

5. Unlock the fuel door: Some vehicles have a release button or lever inside the car, while others simply require you to push on the fuel door itself.

6. Remove the fuel cap: Unscrew the fuel cap by turning it counterclockwise until it comes off. Place it somewhere safe, such as in a pocket or hanging it from the provided holder near the fuel door.

7. Select your payment method: If paying at the pump, insert your credit or debit card into the card reader and follow the on-screen prompts. If paying inside, remember which pump number you’re using and inform the cashier.

8. Securely insert nozzle: Grab the nozzle handle and remove it from its holder, then place it into the opening of your vehicle’s fuel tank. Push it in firmly to ensure a proper seal.

9. Choose the type of gas and begin pumping: Press the button corresponding to the gasoline grade you’ve chosen. Hold the nozzle handle and begin to squeeze the trigger, letting gasoline flow into your car’s tank.

10. Monitor the pump: Keep an eye on the pump’s price display, and be ready to release the trigger once you’ve reached your desired amount or when the pump automatically clicks off.

11. Finish up: After pumping, remove the nozzle from your car’s tank and place it back in its holder. Securely tighten your fuel cap by turning it clockwise until it clicks, then close your fuel door.

12. Record your fuel purchase: Be sure to record how many gallons of gas you pumped and how much it cost, as well as reset your vehicle’s trip odometer if necessary. This will help you to track your vehicle’s mileage and monitor fuel efficiency.

Now that you know how to pump your own gas in 12 easy steps, you can confidently fuel up and hit the road, knowing that this essential car maintenance skill is under your belt.
