With the widespread use of Wi-Fi networks in homes, workplaces, and public spaces, it’s no surprise that our devices are programmed to connect automatically to any available Wi-Fi network. While this feature can be useful, it can also come with drawbacks such as security risks and slow internet speeds. In this article, we will share some practical tips on how to prevent Wi-Fi from connecting automatically.

Disable Auto-Join on iPhone/iPad

On iOS devices such as iPhone and iPad, you can turn off the auto-join feature for Wi-Fi networks by following these steps:

1. Go to Settings on your device.

2. Tap on Wi-Fi.

3. Tap on the blue “i” icon next to the Wi-Fi network you want to stop connecting to automatically.

4. Tap on “Forget This Network” to remove the network from your list of saved networks.

5. Repeat the process for any other networks you want to prevent your device from automatically connecting to.

Disable Auto-Connect on Android

On Android devices, you can disable the auto-connect feature for Wi-Fi networks by following these steps:

1. Go to Settings on your device.

2. Tap on Wi-Fi.

3. Tap on the three horizontal lines in the top right corner of the screen.

4. Tap on “Advanced.”

5. Toggle off the option for “Wi-Fi Automatically Turn On.”

6. Repeat the process for any other options under “Advanced” that you want to prevent your device from connecting to automatically.

Use a VPN

One way to keep your Wi-Fi device from connecting automatically to public Wi-Fi networks is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN encrypts your internet traffic, making it more secure and helping to hide your IP address. When you use a VPN, your device will not automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks you have not previously authorized.

Be Mindful of Open Networks

Avoid connecting to unknown Wi-Fi networks, especially those that are open and unsecured. Hackers can easily install a fake Wi-Fi hotspot that can trick your device into connecting automatically. Always check for the padlock icon to ensure that the Wi-Fi network is secure before connecting.

Turn off Wi-Fi When Not in Use

If you’re not actively using your Wi-Fi, turn it off to prevent your device from connecting to any available networks automatically. This simple step can help protect your privacy and save your device’s battery life.

In conclusion, while auto-connecting Wi-Fi networks can be a convenient feature, it’s important to be mindful of their potential drawbacks. By disabling auto-connect, using a VPN, and being cautious of open networks, you can help keep your device and personal information secure.
