How to Prepare Watercolor Paper

For many artists, watercolor painting is a captivating medium that allows creativity and brilliance to flourish. However, preparing the watercolor paper might be an intimidating task for beginners, resulting in a subpar painting experience. Although it takes a little extra time and effort, proper preparation ensures a smooth final product that withstands the absorption of color without warping or buckling.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of preparing watercolor paper step by step.

1. Choose the Right Watercolor Paper

Before you begin painting, it is crucial to select the appropriate watercolor paper for your project. The three most common types of watercolor paper are hot-pressed, cold-pressed, and rough paper. Hot-pressed paper has a smooth surface best suited for detailed work; cold-pressed paper has a slightly textured surface; and rough paper has the coarsest texture for expressive strokes and bold colors.

2. Measure and Cut Your Paper

Before stretching your watercolor paper, measure the desired dimensions and cut it with a clean, straight edge. Make sure the edges are neat to prevent damage during stretching.

3. Soak Your Paper

Fill a clean basin or sink with room-temperature water deep enough to submerge your paper completely without folding or bending. Submerge your watercolor paper for 1-5 minutes depending on the weight; heavier paper may require additional time.

4. Prepare Your Work Surface

While your paper soaks, lay a flat waterproof board (such as Gatorboard or plywood) on your worktable to create a perfectly smooth surface for stretching your watercolor paper. Ensure the board is larger than your wet paper so that you can staple it properly.

5. Remove Excess Water

Gently lift the soaked watercolor paper from the basin using two hands to support its weight evenly. Hold it over the basin for a few moments to let excess water drain.

6. Attach the Paper to Your Board

Place your wet watercolor paper on the prepared board and smooth the surface with your hands or a clean sponge to remove any air bubbles. Stretch the paper gently if needed, ensuring it is even and wrinkle-free.

7. Staple or Tape the Edges

With your paper in place, use heavy-duty staples or gummed tape (specifically designed for stretching papers) to secure the edges at regular intervals. This step ensures the paper remains flat while drying and prevents warping during painting.

8. Allow Your Paper to Dry

Let your paper dry completely, either at room temperature or by accelerating the process with a hairdryer set on low heat. Once your paper is fully dry, it will be taut and ready for painting.

Conclusion

Preparing your watercolor paper is an essential step in creating a beautiful piece of art. By following these simple steps, you can ensure a smooth and flat surface that holds up well under the application of watercolors. Invest time in preparing your watercolor paper to enhance your overall artistic experience and create lasting paintings that are free from buckling or warping.
