1. Choose the right violin size: Select a violin suited to your age, arm length, and hand size. Children generally require smaller violins.

2. Get a tuner and rosin: Use a chromatic tuner to tune your violin accurately. Additionally, regularly apply rosin to your bow hair for better friction.

3. Learn how to hold the violin: Place the violin between your left shoulder and chin with the bottom resting on your collarbone while using a shoulder rest for added comfort and stability.

4. Position your left hand: Hold the violin’s neck with your thumb on the side opposite the fingerboard and gently cradle it so that your fingers hover over the strings.

5. Study finger placement: Familiarize yourself with correct finger placement on the fingerboard to play specific notes in tune consistently.

6. Learn how to hold the bow: With a relaxed grip, position your thumb on the frog, while placing your remaining fingers evenly across the bow, maintaining flexibility and control.

7. Rosin the bow: Apply rosin to maintain proper friction between the bow hair and strings for quality sound production.

8. Practice bowing technique: Begin by practicing smooth, fluid strokes across individual strings working on straightness, even pressure, and consistency.

9. Learn different bow strokes: Explore various techniques such as legato, staccato, spiccato, and martelé for richer performance styles.

10. Begin with simple scales: Familiarize yourself with major and minor scales in multiple keys to develop finger strength, flexibility, and intonation.

11. Study music notation: Learn how to read sheet music in treble clef notation for basic musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, dynamic markings, and articulation symbols.

12. Develop good posture: Maintain a comfortable yet firm posture while ensuring freedom of movement for both arms without unnecessary tension.

13. Learn basic violin techniques: Vibrato, double stops, and pizzicato are essential techniques that will enrich your violin playing.

14. Practice regularly: Dedicate daily practice time that incorporates fundamental exercises, scales, arpeggios, etudes, and repertoire pieces to continuously progress in your violin skills.

By following these 14 steps, both beginner and experienced players can advance their technique and musicality when learning to play the violin.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
