How to Play Pai Gow Poker: 11 Steps

1. Understand the basics: Pai Gow Poker is a variation of the traditional Chinese domino game Pai Gow, using playing cards instead of dominoes. The game is played with a 53-card deck, including a standard 52-card deck and one joker.

2. Know the objective: The goal of the game is to create two separate poker hands – one with five cards, also known as the high hand, and the other with two cards, called the low hand – that can beat both the dealer’s high and low hands.

3. Familiarize yourself with hand rankings: The hand rankings in Pai Gow Poker are similar to those in traditional poker games but with a few exceptions. In this game, the highest possible straight is A-2-3-4-5, also known as “the wheel.” The second-highest straight is formed by A-K-Q-J-10.

4. Learn about the joker: The joker in Pai Gow Poker serves as a wild card and can be used to complete a straight, flush or straight flush. If it doesn’t complete any of these hands, it acts as an Ace.

5. Start playing: Each player places their bet before receiving seven cards from the dealer. These cards will be separated into high and low hands according to each player’s preference.

6. Set your hand(s): Sort your cards into a five-card high hand and a two-card low hand. Remember that your high hand must have a higher value than your low hand. Mis-setting your hands results in an automatic loss.

7. Wait for dealer’s actions: The dealer will also set their high and low hands according to predetermined rules known as “the house way.” This ensures consistency among dealers in different casinos.

8. Compare hands: After setting your hands, they will be compared to the dealer’s hands. Both your high and low hands must beat the dealer’s corresponding hands to win the bet.

9. Payouts: If you win both hands, you’ll receive an even-money payout minus a 5% commission fee. If you lose both hands, you’ll lose your bet. If you win one hand and lose the other, it’s considered a push, and no money changes hands.

10. Ties: In case of a tie between the player’s hand and the dealer’s hand, the dealer wins.

11. Continue playing: After payouts are made, gather your cards, place another bet if desired, and start a new round!

By following these 11 steps, you’re now ready to enjoy the exciting game of Pai Gow Poker. Remember to practice your skills, manage your bankroll wisely, be mindful of table limits, and most importantly – have fun!
