How to Play Bocce Ball: 13 Steps
1. Gather your equipment: To play bocce ball, you’ll need a set of eight bocce balls (four balls in two different colors), a smaller target ball called the “pallino,” and a flat, open space to play.
2. Choose teams: Divide the players into two teams. Each team can have one to four players.
3. Establish the court: Select a flat, rectangular area to serve as your bocce court. Make sure it’s clear of any obstacles and is at least 8 feet wide and 60 feet long. Mark the boundaries with cones or chalk.
4. Toss the pallino: To begin the game, one player from either team throws the pallino onto the court. It must land at least 5 feet from the end line and 2 feet from the side lines.
5. Determine who starts: Each team selects one player to throw their bocce ball first. The initial starting team is determined by a coin toss or another agreed-upon method.
6. Throw the first ball: The player from the starting team attempts to throw their bocce ball as close as possible to the pallino without touching it.
7. Alternate throws: After the first throw, players from opposing teams take turns throwing their bocce balls. The goal is to either land closer to the pallino than their opponents’ balls or knock opponents’ balls away from the pallino.
8. Continue playing until all balls are thrown: Each player has one turn per round, and each round continues until all eight bocce balls have been thrown.
9. Score points: After all balls are thrown, score points based on proximity to the pallino. The team with a ball closest to the pallino earns one point for each of their balls that are closer than their opponent’s closest ball.
10. Retrieve bocce balls and pallino: After each round, players collect their bocce balls and the pallino is returned to the starting team for the next round.
11. Switch ends: To keep the game fair and balanced, teams switch ends of the court after each round.
12. Repeat rounds until a winning score is reached: The game continues in rounds until one team reaches a pre-determined number of points (usually 12 or 15).
13. Celebrate: Shake hands with your opponents, congratulate your teammates, and enjoy your bocce ball victory!
