How to Paint Concrete Statues: 14 Steps

Step 1: Choose a well-ventilated workspace

Select an open area with proper air circulation to work on your concrete statue. This helps prevent the buildup of toxic fumes from paint and solvent use.

Step 2: Clean the statue

Ensure your concrete statue is free of dirt, grime, mold, or mildew by cleaning it with a mixture of water and mild detergent. Use a soft brush to scrub any stubborn stains and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Step 3: Repair any damage

Inspect the statue for cracks or chips. If you find any damage, use a concrete patching compound to fill in gaps. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and let the patched areas dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Apply a sealer

Apply a concrete sealer to protect your statue from moisture and to provide a smoother surface for paint to adhere to. Allow the sealer to dry according to the manufacturer’s recommended time.

Step 5: Prime the surface

Use an acrylic primer designed for outdoor use on concrete surfaces. Apply a thin, even coat using a paintbrush or roller and allow it to dry completely before applying paint.

Step 6: Choose the right paint

Opt for acrylic latex paints that are designed specifically for outdoor concrete surfaces. They offer excellent adhesion, durability, and weather resistance.

Step 7: Select appropriate colors

Choose colors that complement your statue’s design and will hold up well in outdoor conditions. Keep in mind that lighter colors may require multiple coats for full coverage.

Step 8: Test paint on a small area

Before painting the entire statue, apply paint on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility with the surface and satisfaction with your color choice.

Step 9: Apply the base coat

Using a good-quality paintbrush or roller, apply an even base coat of your chosen color to the entire statue. Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Step 10: Add details

Use smaller paintbrushes to carefully add details and accents to your statue. Be sure to allow each color to dry before applying a new one to avoid smudging or bleeding.

Step 11: Apply a protective clear coat

Once you are satisfied with your painting and all colors have dried, apply a clear, non-yellowing acrylic sealant designed for outdoor use. This will protect your paint job from fading, chipping, and damage caused by exposure to the elements.

Step 12: Let the statue dry

Allow the clear coat to dry as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not move or touch the statue during this time to prevent damage or smudging.

Step 13: Inspect your work

Once the sealant has dried, carefully inspect the entire statue for any imperfections or areas that need touch-ups. If necessary, make minor adjustments with a small paintbrush and let them dry before re-applying the clear coat.

Step 14: Display your painted concrete statue

Carefully move your painted concrete statue to its designated display area in your garden or outdoor space. Enjoy your newly transformed concrete art piece!
