1. Understand the Purpose of UPC Codes

A Universal Product Code (UPC) is a unique 12-digit number assigned to retail products, which helps to identify and track items within stores and across supply chains. These codes are essential for inventory management and facilitate retail transactions.

2. Determine Whether You Need a UPC Code

If you plan on selling your product in retail stores or online marketplaces, such as Amazon or Walmart, obtaining a UPC code is necessary. In some cases, if you’re selling exclusively through your own website, you may not require a UPC code.

3. Choose the Right Type of Barcode

When it comes to barcodes, there are several types to choose from. However, for most retail products, the standard UPC-A barcode is used. This type contains 12 numeric digits and is the most common barcode format found on retail products.

4. Register with GS1 US

GS1 US is the organization responsible for issuing unique UPC codes. To obtain an official UPC code for your product, you must apply for one through their website at www.gs1us.org. During registration, you’ll need to provide basic information about your business and pay associated fees.

5. Obtain Your Company Prefix

After registering with GS1 US, you will be assigned a unique company prefix that forms the first part of your UPC code. This prefix identifies your business as the manufacturer or product owner.

6. Generate Your Product Code

The remaining numbers in your UPC code after the company prefix are your product codes, which are specific to each individual product you offer. As the manufacturer or product owner, it’s your responsibility to assign these codes to each of your products while ensuring no duplicates exist.

7. Create Your Barcode Image

Once you have your completed 12-digit UPC code, use barcode generation software or an online tool to generate an appropriate barcode image file. This file will be used by your printer or label supplier to create a scannable barcode for your product packaging.

By following these seven steps, obtaining a UPC code can be a straightforward process that aids in proper inventory management and retail marketability, ensuring the success of your product in stores and online marketplaces.
