Transferring ownership of a car requires notarizing the car title. Notarizing the title ensures that the document is original and that the information provided by the seller is accurate. Follow these 10 steps to successfully notarize a car title.

1. Gather necessary documents: Before heading to a notary, gather your car title, your identification (usually a driver’s license), and any additional supporting documents required by your state.

2. Check title accuracy: Review the car title for errors or missing information. Make sure all necessary fields are filled out accurately, including vehicle identification number (VIN), make, model, year, and mileage.

3. Locate a notary: Find a licensed notary in your area. Many banks offer notary services, or you can search online for local notaries.

4. Make an appointment: Some notaries require appointments. Contact the notary before going to ensure they’ll be available to assist you at your desired time.

5. Bring all parties: Both buyer and seller should be present during the notarization process to verify their identities and sign the required paperwork.

6. Verify identity: The notary will check photo IDs of both parties to confirm their identities before proceeding.

7. Sign in presence of notary: With the notary as witness, both buyer and seller must sign the title in the designated areas.

8. Notarize signatures: The notary will apply their stamp or seal on the title document, verifying the authenticity of both parties’ signatures and providing their own signature as well.

9. Pay any fees: Some notaries charge a small fee for their services, so be prepared with cash or another accepted form of payment.

10. Submit paperwork to the appropriate agency: After completing the notarization process, submit all necessary documents to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or the appropriate agency handling title transfers in your state.

Following these 10 steps will ensure a smooth notarization of your car title, keeping both the buyer and seller protected during the transfer process.
