In a world full of stress and emotional turbulence, learning how to cope with difficult emotions and not feel overwhelmed can be beneficial. Here are 14 steps to help you gain control over your feelings and detach yourself when needed.

1. Identify your emotions: Start by recognizing the feelings you’re experiencing. Gaining an understanding of your emotions makes them manageable.

2. Meditate: Meditation can help clear your mind and achieve a state of calmness, allowing you to distance yourself from your emotions.

3. Practicing mindfulness: Focus on the present moment and your surroundings rather than getting lost in your thoughts and emotions.

4. Take deep breaths: Deep breathing exercises can help reduce anxiety and stress, making it easier to detach from your feelings.

5. Engage in physical activity: Exercise releases endorphins that help combat stress and elevate mood.

6. Avoid triggers: Identify situations or people that tend to provoke strong emotions and work on reducing your exposure to them.

7. Set boundaries: Create emotional boundaries by communicating your limits to others and learning to say no when necessary.

8. Acknowledge and accept emotions: Understand that it’s normal to have feelings, accept them without judgment, but also realize that you don’t need to act on them or let them control you.

9. Use healthy distractions: Engage in activities that make you happy or stimulate your mind, helping take the focus off your emotions.

10. Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and emotions can be a therapeutic way of processing and detaching from them.

11. Prioritize self-care: Regularly engage in activities that promote mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

12. Seek support from loved ones or a therapist: Talking about your emotions with someone else can provide an external perspective, as well as validation and support for what you’re going through.

13. Practice gratitude: Focus on the positive aspects of your life and everything you’re grateful for, which can help shift your mindset away from overwhelming feelings.

14. Patience and persistence: Learning to not feel takes time and practice. Be patient with yourself and make a conscious effort to incorporate these steps into your daily routine.

By following these steps, you can gain more control over your emotions, allowing you to detach when needed and lead a more balanced life. Not feeling doesn’t mean becoming numb to emotions, but rather mastering the ability to regulate them effectively.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject.
