Mist coating with paint is an essential step when painting new plaster, as it allows the plaster to breathe and absorb moisture before sealing it with a topcoat. This process ensures a durable and even finish on your walls. In this article, we will guide you through the 12 steps to successfully mist coat with paint.

1. Gather materials: To begin, you will need a paint roller, paint tray, 2-inch paintbrush, mixing stick, clean water, and a suitable mist coat paint (typically a watered-down emulsion paint).

2. Prepare the space: Remove any furniture or decorations from the room and cover the floor with drop cloths to protect it from paint splatters.

3. Clean the surface: Make sure the plaster is clean, dry, and free of dust or dirt to ensure proper adhesion of the paint.

4. Mix the mist coat: Combine your chosen emulsion paint with water in a mixing container using a 60-70% paint to 30-40% water ratio. Mix thoroughly using a stirring stick until smooth.

5. Test the mixture: Dip a brush into the paint mixture and apply a small amount of the mist coat onto an inconspicuous area of your plaster wall. If it dries evenly without patchiness or drips, your mixture is ready for use.

6. Start at an edge: Begin painting at the top corner of one wall using your 2-inch brush.

7. Apply horizontal strokes: Using your brush, apply even horizontal strokes about 2-3 feet long across the wall’s surface.

8. Roll paint onto larger areas: Load your roller with paint and roll it across the middle of each horizontal section you’ve brushed onto the wall, moving from side to side to spread the mist coat evenly.

9. Overlap horizontal sections: Maintain consistent pressure and make sure to overlap the brushed sections slightly to create a seamless finish.

10. Apply a second coat (if necessary): Allow your mist coat to dry completely for 2-3 hours. If patchiness or unevenness is still present, you may apply a second mist coat, repeating steps 4-9.

11. Clean up: Wash your brushes, rollers, and other tools with soap and warm water before the paint dries on them. Cover any remaining paint mixture in airtight containers for future touch-ups or disposal.

12. Apply the topcoat: Once your mist coat has dried completely and achieved the desired finish, you can proceed with applying your chosen topcoat of paint following the manufacturer’s instructions.

By following these 12 steps, you’ll ensure that your freshly plastered walls receive a durable, even, and professional-looking paint finish.
