Introduction:

Auto-tuning is a popular technique used in music production to correct pitch, enhance vocal tracks, or create unique sound effects. Audacity, an open-source and free audio editing software, offers the tools necessary for manually adjusting the pitch of your audio track like a pro. This article will guide you step-by-step on how to manually auto-tune using Audacity.

Step 1: Download and Install Audacity

Firstly, download and install Audacity from the official website (https://www.audacityteam.org/). Make sure to choose the version compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

Step 2: Import Your Audio File

After installing and launching Audacity, import the audio file you want to auto-tune. To do this, click on “File” in the top-left corner and select “Open.” Then navigate to your audio file, click on it, and press “Open” once more.

Step 3: Use Gsnap As an Add-on

Audacity needs an add-on called Gsnap to facilitate manual auto-tuning. Download Gsnap from a reliable source (e.g., http://www.gvst.co.uk/downloads.htm). Extract the downloaded file and move the .dll or .vst file into Audacity’s plug-in directory. Once done, restart Audacity.

Go to “Effects” in the menu bar and check for Gsnap at the bottom of the drop-down list. If it doesn’t appear, click “Add / Remove Plug-ins,” look for Gsnap in the list, then enable it by clicking on the checkbox.

Step 4: Configure Gsnap for Auto-tuning

Select the portion of your audio track that requires auto-tuning. Click on the “Effects” tab and then select “Gsnap.” A window with Gsnap’s settings will appear. Here, you can customize the settings depending on the desired level of pitch correction and style.

Set the following parameters for a subtle auto-tune:

– Minimum Frequency: 40 Hz

– Maximum Frequency: 2,000 Hz

– Gate: -80 dB

– Speed: 3 ms

– Threshold: 100 cents

– Amount: 100%

– Attack: 1 ms

– Release: 1 ms

For an extreme ‘T-Pain’ effect, alter the following settings:

– Speed: 0 ms

– Threshold: 0 cents

Step 5: Apply the Settings and Export Your File

Once you have set your desired parameters, press “OK” to apply auto-tuning to your selected audio segment. After assessing the tuned result, save your project by clicking “File” > “Export” > “Export as WAV” (or any preferred format). Name your file, choose the location where you want to save it and click “Save.” Close Audacity once your file has successfully exported.

Conclusion:

Now you know how to manually auto-tune with Audacity! With these basic guidelines and a little practice, you can experiment with different Gsnap settings and effects to create a unique sound for each project. Happy tuning!
