How to Make T-Shirt Blankets

T-shirt blankets are a creative and practical way to preserve memories and upcycle old clothing. They’re perfect for college students, sentimental parents, or anyone who wants a cozy, homemade blanket that tells a story. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of making your own t-shirt blanket.
1. Gather Materials
To create your t-shirt blanket, you’ll need the following materials:
– 12 to 30 t-shirts (depending on your desired size)
– Scissors
– Sewing machine
– Thread
-Pins
-Quilting ruler or measuring tape
– Cutting mat (if available)
– Rotary cutter and/or fabric scissors
– Iron and ironing board
2. Design Your Blanket
Lay out your t-shirts and decide on a pattern for your blanket. Common patterns include a simple grid, checkerboard, or diagonal stripes. If you’re feeling creative, you can even design a pattern using different-sized squares or rectangles.
3. Measure and Cut
Decide on the size of your squares. The most common size is 12″ x 12″, but you can choose any size that suits your design.
Place each t-shirt flat on a cutting mat and use the quilting ruler or measuring tape as a guide to cut out equal squares from each shirt. Make sure to cut through both layers of the t-shirt material so you have two squares per shirt.
4. Assemble Your Blanket
Once all of your t-shirt squares have been cut out, arrange them in your desired pattern on a flat surface (like a bed or large table). This will help you visualize how your blanket will look when finished.
5. Sew Rows Together
Begin sewing by connecting the squares in each row together using a straight stitch on your sewing machine. Place two squares right sides together and sew along one edge. Repeat with the remaining squares until you’ve completed all of the rows.
6. Join Rows
Connect the rows by placing two finished rows right sides together and pinning along the long edge. Sew along the pinned edge and repeat until all of your rows are connected.
7. Add a Backing (optional)
If your t-shirt blanket feels too thin or you want to add more structure, you can sew on a backing material like fleece or flannel. You may also add batting between the t-shirt layer and backing fabric if desired. Lay out your backing fabric on a flat surface, right side down, and place your t-shirt blanket on top, right side up.
Cut the backing material to size, allowing for an additional 1″ around all sides for a seam allowance.
Pin the two layers together along the perimeter, making sure to align edges evenly. Sew around three sides of the blanket, leaving one short side open (like a pillowcase).
8. Finish Your Blanket
Finally, turn your blanket right side out through the open side and hand-stitch or use a sewing machine to close the opening. Trim any loose threads and iron if necessary.
Congratulations, you’ve successfully created your very own t-shirt blanket! Enjoy its warmth and comfort while reminiscing on wonderful memories held within each square.
