How to Make Pepper Steak: 14 Steps
Step 1: Gather your ingredients
To prepare pepper steak, you will need the following ingredients:
– 1.5 pounds of sirloin steak, thinly sliced
– 1 cup of bell peppers (any color), thinly sliced
– 1 medium-sized onion, thinly sliced
– 2 garlic cloves, minced
– 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
– 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
– 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
– 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with an equal amount of water
– Salt and pepper to taste
Step 2: Prepare the steak
Trim any excess fat from the sirloin steak and slice it thinly against the grain. This will help ensure that your meat remains tender throughout the cooking process.
Step 3: Marinate the steak
In a mixing bowl, combine the sliced steak, soy sauce, and a pinch of black pepper. Stir well to ensure all pieces are coated evenly. Set aside to marinate for at least 20 minutes.
Step 4: Prepare your vegetables
Wash and dry your bell peppers before removing their seeds and slicing them thinly. Also, peel and slice the onion and mince the garlic cloves.
Step 5: Heat the oil in a large pan or wok
Place a large pan or wok over medium-high heat and pour in the vegetable oil. Allow it to heat up for about a minute or until shimmering.
Step 6: Sear the steak slices
Working in batches if necessary, add the marinated steak to the pan and sear both sides for about two minutes each or until browned but not yet fully cooked. Remove from heat.
Step 7: Saute onion and garlic
Add more oil to the pan if needed before tossing in sliced onions and minced garlic. Saute for about two minutes or until the onions become translucent and fragrant.
Step 8: Cook the bell peppers
Add the sliced bell peppers to the pan and cook for an additional two to three minutes until they’re softened but still crisp.
Step 9: Return steak slices to the pan
Stir in the seared steak slices, making sure they’re well distributed among the vegetables.
Step 10: Add oyster sauce
Pour oyster sauce over the steak and vegetables, stirring gently to combine all ingredients evenly.
Step 11: Thicken with cornstarch mixture
Slowly pour in the cornstarch-water mixture while stirring continuously, making sure to coat all of the ingredients. This will help thicken up your dish’s sauce.
Step 12: Taste and adjust seasoning
Now for a taste test; see if you need to add additional salt or pepper. Season to your preference.
Step 13: Cook until desired consistency is achieved
Allow your pepper steak mixture to cook for another minute or two, stirring occasionally until you reach your desired consistency.
Step 14: Serve and enjoy!
Serve your homemade pepper steak hot, either on its own or with a side of steamed white rice or noodles, and enjoy a flavorful meal!
