How to Make Hakama Pants
Hakama pants are a traditional Japanese garment worn over a kimono, typically by martial artists and practitioners of several other cultural activities. With their wide legs and distinctive pleats, hakama pants offer both comfort and an elegant appearance. If you’re interested in making your own pair, follow this step-by-step guide to create a unique piece of clothing that pays homage to Japanese tradition.
Materials You’ll Need:
– Hakama fabric (preferably lightweight and durable)
– Measuring tape
– Scissors
– Sewing machine or needle and thread
– Fabric chalk or marking pen
– Straight pins
– Iron and ironing board
Step 1: Measure Yourself
To begin, take your measurements to ensure the hakama pants fit you comfortably. Measure your waist, hips, and the desired length (from your waist to your ankles).
Step 2: Cut Your Fabric
Use the measurements you’ve taken to cut fabric for the following pieces: two large rectangles for the front and back of the pants, two smaller rectangles for the waistband, and two medium-sized rectangles for the side hip panels.
For each large rectangle (front and back), calculate the width as half of your hip measurement plus 2 inches for seam allowance. The length should be equal to your desired pant length. Keep in mind that hakama pants are designed loose-fitting, so adjust measurements accordingly if necessary.
Step 3: Create Pleats
On each large rectangle, mark seven equally spaced vertical lines with fabric chalk – these will serve as guides for folding pleats. Fold along each line, pinning pleats in place perpendicular to the top edge. Repeat for both front and back pieces.
Step 4: Sew Side Hip Panels
Take the medium-sized rectangles (side hip panels) and fold down one long edge about half an inch. Sew along the folded edge, creating a clean, finished seam. Then attach each side hip panel to the corresponding front or back piece by aligning the unfinished long edge with the outermost pleat and sewing in place.
Step 5: Sew Pants Together
Lay the front piece and back piece together with right sides facing each other. Sew along the side seams, leaving the top 10 inches open to allow room for attaching the waistband later.
Step 6: Prepare Waistband
Take the two smaller rectangles (waistband pieces) and fold them in half lengthwise, right sides together. Sew along the open edge atop, leaving the ends open for turning. Turn them right-side-out and press flat with an iron.
Step 7: Attach Waistband
Align one waistband piece’s raw edge with the top of your pants’ front piece. Sew along this edge, ensuring you sew through all layers of fabric, including pleats. Repeat on the other side with the back piece and remaining waistband piece. Finally, attach the two loose ends of your waistbands by sewing them together smoothly.
Step 8: Hemming
Lastly, turn up about one inch of fabric at the bottom of each pant leg and sew a hem in place.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully created your very own pair of hakama pants!
