How to Make Furry Cat Ears: 11 Steps
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, gather all the necessary materials. You will need the following:
– Faux fur fabric
– Craft wire
– Fabric scissors
– Needle and thread
– A headband or hair clips to attach the ears
– Superglue or hot glue gun
– Ruler and measuring tape
Step 2: Measure and Cut the Fabric
Using a ruler or measuring tape, measure out two rectangles of faux fur fabric, each about 5 inches by 4 inches. Cut the pieces carefully with fabric scissors.
Step 3: Create Your Ear Template
Draw a triangle shape on a piece of cardboard or cardstock. The triangle should be approximately 3 inches wide at the base and 4 inches tall. Cut this template out with scissors.
Step 4: Trace and Cut Ear Shapes
Place your template onto one rectangle of faux fur, with the base of the triangle against the edge of the fabric. Trace around it using a pen or marker. Cut your desired ear, remembering to cut through just the fabric backing and not the fur itself. Repeat this process for your second ear.
Step 5: Sewing Ears Together
Put the two pieces together with their right sides facing toward each other. Sew along both sides while leaving the bottom edge open. Turn them inside out after finishing your stitches.
Step 6: Create an Inner Ear Shape
Cut two smaller triangles of fabric in a contrasting color to create inner ear designs. Glue these onto each ear and just cover seams using super glue or hot glue gun.
Step 7: Assembling Wireframe Ear Structure
Cut two pieces of craft wire, each roughly double the height of your ears (approximately 8 inches long). Bend each wire piece into a triangular shape, mimicking cat ear proportions.
Step 8: Attaching Wire to the Ears
Insert the wire frame into each ear, making sure that the wire sits along the seams. Secure the wire with a few stitches or by using super glue or hot glue.
Step 9: Attaching Ears to the Headband
Place the bottom of each ear on either side of the headband, roughly 1-2 inches apart. You can use super glue or stitch them directly to your desired placement on headband
Step 10: Attach a Hair Clip (Optional)
If you prefer to use hair clips instead of a headband, sew a clip to each cat ear’s base.
Step 11: Style Your New Cat Ears
Put on your headband or clip and adjust your new cat ears. Brush through their fur to fluff them up and make them look more natural!
Congratulations on crafting your furry cat ears! Wear them proudly at your next cosplay event, Halloween party, or just for fun.
