How to Make Concrete: 13 Steps

Concrete is a versatile and essential part of modern construction. It is made from mixing cement, sand, aggregates, and water. When combined, these materials harden to form a durable substance that can be used for foundations, walls, floors, and other structures. To achieve the right consistency and strength, it is essential to follow these tried-and-tested steps in making concrete.
1. Gather materials: For a basic concrete mix, you will need Portland cement, coarse aggregate (gravel), fine aggregate (sand), and clean water.
2. Prepare the area: If you are making concrete for a project site, clear debris and level the area where you plan to pour your mix.
3. Choose the correct proportions of each ingredient: A standard mix is usually made up of one part portland cement, two parts sand, and three parts coarse aggregate. However, you can adjust ratios depending on your specific needs.
4. Mix dry materials: In a wheelbarrow or mixer, combine the sand, gravel and cement until they are evenly distributed.
5. Add water in small increments: Add water slowly so you do not over-saturate your mix. The ideal consistency resembles thick pancake batter or cookie dough.
6. Combine ingredients thoroughly: Keep mixing until all components are evenly incorporated and there are no signs of dry cement or pockets of unmixed aggregates.
7. Test slump consistency: To ensure that your mix has proper workability and hydration levels, hold up a wooden trowel filled with concrete; if it retains its shape without slumping down too much or falling off the trowel, your consistency is good.
8. Pour concrete into molds/forms or onto the prepared surface: Work quickly while the concrete is still pliable; this helps to fill all gaps without leaving voids or cracks in the finished structure.
9. Use a straight-edged board to level off excess concrete and smooth the surface: This is called “screeding” the mix.
10. Consolidate and eliminate air bubbles: Tap the sides of your mold, or use a vibrating tool on larger projects, to help any trapped air escape.
11. Finish the surface: Depending on your desired outcome, you may need to finish the surface using a float, trowel or broom for texture.
12. Allow the concrete to set and harden: This typically takes 24-48 hours depending on the climate and mix used. Do not disturb or apply weight on the concrete during this time.
13. Cure the concrete: For optimal strength development, maintain a damp environment around your project for at least seven days. You can achieve this by using water-soaked cloths, plastic sheeting or by spraying it lightly with water multiple times a day.
By following these careful steps and adjusting materials as needed, you can create strong and lasting concrete surfaces that are essential to many different construction projects.
