Apple jam, a delicious and versatile treat, can be used as a spread for toast, as a topping for desserts or even as a filling for pies! Follow these 13 simple steps to make your own mouth-watering apple jam:

1. Gather Ingredients:

– 4 cups chopped apples (preferably tart varieties like Granny Smith or Northern Spy)

– 2 cups granulated sugar

– ¼ cup lemon juice

– 1 tsp ground cinnamon

– ½ tsp ground nutmeg

– A pinch of salt

2. Prepare the apples: Wash, peel, core and chop the apples into small pieces.

3. Combine all ingredients: In a large pot, combine chopped apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

4. Cook the mixture: Place the pot on medium heat and cook the mixture slowly until the sugar dissolves completely. This will prevent scorching.

5. Mash the apples: Use a potato masher or fork to mash the softened apples into smaller chunks.

6. Intensify the flavor: Increase heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil.

7. Stir frequently: Stir constantly to prevent burning and promote even cooking.

8. Check for desired consistency: Cook until the jam reaches your preferred thickness. You can test this by spooning some jam onto a cold plate, letting it cool momentarily, and running your finger through it. If it holds its shape without being too watery, it’s ready.

9. Remove from heat: Once the desired consistency is achieved, remove the pot from heat and let it cool slightly.

10. Sterilize jars: While your jam is cooking, sterilize your jars in boiling water for at least 10 minutes to ensure they’re safe from bacteria.

11. Fill jars with hot jam: Carefully pour or spoon the hot jam into the sterilized jars, leaving a ¼-inch space at the top to allow for expansion during the canning process.

12. Seal and process the jars: Wipe the rims of the jars clean and seal them with their two-piece lids before placing them in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes to fully seal and preserve the jam.

13. Store and enjoy: Remove your jars from boiling water and let them cool. Check to ensure that they have sealed properly – you should hear a slight “pop” as they cool. Store your homemade apple jam in a cool, dark place and relish its deliciousness within the next year!

Now you know how to make apple jam from scratch in 13 simple steps. It’s time to share this delightful treat with family and friends or simply savor it all by yourself!
