How to Make an Origami Wolf

Origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, has been practiced for centuries and continues to captivate people of all ages. One popular origami model is the wolf, combining the beauty of the animal with the precision of paper folding. In this article, we will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to create your very own origami wolf.
Materials You Will Need:
- Square piece of paper (preferably 6″x6″ or larger)
- Flat surface for folding
Before You Begin:
- Choose your ideal paper color for your wolf, as traditional origami requires a single sheet of paper without any cuts or glue.
- Familiarize yourself with common origami terms and symbols, such as valley fold, mountain fold, and squash fold.
Now that you’re prepared let’s dive into creating your origami wolf!
Step 1: Preparing the Paper
Place your square sheet of paper on a flat surface with the colored side face down.
Step 2: Creating Basic Folds
Fold the paper in half diagonally to create a triangle. Unfold it and repeat by folding it in half diagonally from the opposite corners. Open it up again; now you should have an “X” crease on your paper.
Step 3: Making a Square Base
With the colored side up, fold the paper in half horizontally. Unfold and fold it in half vertically, creating a “+” mark. Next, position the “+” center point upward and fold all four corners towards that center point using valley folds. As you do this, the outer edges will collapse inward due to earlier diagonal folds. Flatten them symmetrically to form a smaller square, which is known as a square base.
Step 4: Folding Ears and Tail
Fold two adjacent flaps upwards using mountain folds; these will become the wolf’s ears. Fold the bottom point upwards, creating a small triangle – this will be the tail. On the opposite side of that point, fold it back downward (about halfway down) with a mountain fold so that the tail points outward on the other side.
Step 5: Shaping the Face and Body
Slightly open the wolf’s face and squash fold the corner of each ear inward for added detail. For the body, make an inside reverse fold on each of the four legs (two front and two back) to give them more dimension.
Step 6: Final Touches
To add life to your wolf, use a pen or pencil to draw eyes, nose, mouth, and whisker details on its face. Optionally, you can curve the edges of ears or various parts of its body to give it a more realistic appearance.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully folded an origami wolf. With patience and practice, you’ll be able to create even more intricate models in no time. Origami is not only a fun activity but also provides numerous mental benefits such as improved concentration, mindfulness, and reduced stress.
