How to Make an Origami Whale

Origami, the art of paper folding, has a rich history that spans back to ancient times. It is a practice that promotes creativity, patience, and concentration. One fantastic origami creation to try is the origami whale. Whales are majestic creatures that have always fascinated us, so why not bring them to life through paper art? In this article, we’ll guide you through a step-by-step process on how to make an origami whale.
Materials Needed:
1. A square piece of origami paper (preferably blue or grey)
2. A flat surface
3. Optional: marker or pen for drawing details
Step 1: Prepare the paper
Start by placing the paper on a flat surface with the colored side facing down. If you’re using origami paper with one white side and one colored side, ensure the colored side is facing down.
Step 2: Fold diagonally
Fold your square piece of paper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Make sure the edges align properly, then crease firmly and unfold.
Step 3: Fold into kite shape
Take the left and right points of your triangle and fold them towards the center crease, creating a kite-like shape. Be sure to press firmly along the newly created folds.
Step 4: Create tail flaps
With the folded kite shape facing up, take the bottom corner of your kite and fold it towards you over the top edge. Next, reverse fold this flap back along its center line and leave it facing upwards to create a smaller double-layered tail flap.
Step 5: Form whale’s body
Flip your origami over and gently pull out both layers of the tail flap while keeping its base intact. Now create another reverse fold on each side by opening up the lower part of both sides while flattening them along their crease lines. Press firmly to establish your whale’s body shape.
Step 6: Fold the tail
Fold the remaining tip of the triangular base up towards the whale’s body, creating an angled tail. Use your fingers to curl and slightly bend the tail flaps outward, giving your origami whale a more three-dimensional look.
Step 7: Create the head (optional)
For a more advanced fold, create a head for your whale by making a small reverse fold on the pointed side of its body. If desired, use a pen or marker to add eyes and other facial details.
