How to Make an Octopus Costume: 14 Steps
Creating a unique and eye-catching costume for a party or event can be a fun and fulfilling experience. One such idea is an octopus costume. Follow these 14 steps to create your very own octopus costume that will impress your friends and family.
1. Gather materials: You’ll need fabric, sewing supplies, elastic, stuffing, cardboard, safety pins, and hot glue gun.
2. Choose a base: Start by selecting an oversized shirt or hoodie in the color you want your octopus to be.
3. Measure the tentacles: Take measurements from the base of the shirt/hoodie to as far down as you would like the tentacles to reach.
4. Cut out the tentacles: Using your fabric, cut out eight long tentacle shapes based on your measurements. Be sure to make each tentacle slightly wider at the top than at the bottom.
5. Sew the tentacles: Use a sewing machine or hand-sew the fabric cutouts together, creating long fabric tubes with one open end.
6. Turn them right-side out: Once sewed, carefully turn each tentacle right-side out using a pencil or chopstick to push the fabric through.
7. Stuff the tentacles: Fill each fabric tube with stuffing until it reaches your desired fullness.
8. Attach tentacles to the base: Use safety pins to secure each stuffed tentacle evenly around the bottom of your chosen shirt/hoodie.
9. Sew elastic loops: Attach elastic loops to the top of each tentacle so you can easily move and walk while wearing your octopus costume.
10. Prepare cardboard suckers: Cut small circles out of cardboard to create suckers for each tentacle, then paint them if desired.
11. Hot glue suckers onto tentacles: Space out the cardboard suckers along each stuffed arm and secure them with hot glue.
12. Create the headpiece: Use cardboard or foam to create a round, flat octopus head that can fit on top of your hat or hood. Cut out octopus eyes and any other details you’d like to add, then hot glue them all to the headpiece.
13. Attach the headpiece: Secure the octopus headpiece to your hat or hood using hot glue, ensuring it is firmly in place.
14. Complete your costume: Pair your octopus hoodie/shirt with coordinating leggings or pants and practice moving your tentacles for a convincing finish!
Now you have successfully created an amazing octopus costume! Wear it proudly at a party, parade, or event and enjoy showing off your handmade creation.
