How to Make Aftershave: 10 Steps

Aftershave is an essential part of any man’s grooming routine, helping to soothe the skin after shaving and leaving a pleasant scent behind. While commercial aftershaves are widely available, making your own allows you to create a unique and customized product tailored to your skin type and preferences. Follow these 10 steps to create your perfect aftershave at home.

1. Choose a base: The base of your aftershave will determine its texture and properties. Common bases include witch hazel, aloe vera gel, and various carrier oils like jojoba oil or grapeseed oil. Choose a base that meets your preferred application method and suits your skin type.

2. Select essential oils: Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that contribute both fragrance and skincare benefits. Some popular choices for aftershaves include lavender, sandalwood, cedarwood, and peppermint. Create a blend that reflects your personal preferences or consider any potential skin benefits when selecting essential oils.

3. Dilute the essential oils: Essential oils should always be diluted before applying them to the skin. As a general rule of thumb, use a 2% dilution, which equates to about 12 drops of essential oil per ounce of base.

4. Add additional ingredients: Consider incorporating additional skincare ingredients like glycerin for extra moisturization, vitamin E oil for antioxidants or even allantoin for added soothing properties.

5. Mix the base and additives: Combine your chosen base with the diluted essential oils and any additional ingredients in a glass bowl or measuring cup, mixing until thoroughly blended.

6. Test the mixture: Before applying the finished product to your face, it’s important to perform a patch test on a small area of your skin (like the inside of your elbow) to ensure there are no adverse reactions.

7. Adjust the formula if needed: If your skin reacts negatively or you’re unhappy with the finished product’s texture or scent, revisit steps 2-5 to make any necessary adjustments to your aftershave recipe.

8. Transfer to a suitable container: Once you’re satisfied with your homemade aftershave, transfer it into an airtight container like a glass bottle with a stopper or pump dispenser. Avoid plastic containers, as they can interact with essential oils and compromise the product’s effectiveness.

9. Label and date the container: To keep track of your creation and its shelf life, label your aftershave with its ingredients and the date you made it. Most homemade aftershaves have a shelf life of 6-12 months.

10. Incorporate into your grooming routine: Now that you’ve crafted your personalized aftershave, integrate it into your daily shaving routine by applying it immediately after shaving for soothing comfort and lasting fragrance.

By following these ten steps, you can create your very own aftershave that caters to your skin type and preferred scents. Experiment with different ingredients and fragrances to find the perfect blend for you. Happy shaving!
