How to Make a Tube Top

A tube top is a chic and versatile piece of clothing that can be styled in numerous ways, making it a must-have wardrobe staple. Creating your own DIY tube top is surprisingly easy to do and gives you the freedom to customize the materials, colors, and designs according to your taste. In this article, we will guide you through the steps on how to make a tube top at home.
Materials You Will Need:
1. Stretchy fabric (knit or jersey works best)
2. Measuring tape
3. Scissors
4. Pins
5. Sewing machine or needle and thread
6. Elastic (optional)
Step 1: Take your measurements
Using a measuring tape, measure around your bust where you want the top edge of the tube top to be. This measurement will be the width of your fabric piece. Next, decide the desired length of your tube top and write both measurements down.
Step 2: Cut your fabric
Now that you have your measurements, cut out a rectangle from the fabric using the width and length you’ve taken earlier. Since stretchy fabrics tend to curl at the edges, ensure that you cut with a little excess material to create a clean seam later.
Step 3: Pin and sew the hem
With your fabric laid flat, fold over approximately half an inch of material on both shorter sides of the rectangle (the top and bottom edges), then pin them in place. This creates a hemline for your tube top. Sew along each pinned edge with a zigzag stitch or any other stretch stitch using a sewing machine or needle and thread.
Step 4: Sewing the side seam
Fold your fabric in half lengthwise with the right side (the side of the fabric meant to face outward) facing inward. Line up both hemmed edges evenly and pin along the open side to create the side seam.
Sew the side seam together using a zigzag stitch or another stretch stitch, careful not to catch the hemmed edges in your seam. Be sure to leave around an inch of room at both the top and bottom edges for adding elastic (if desired).
Step 5: Add elastic (optional)
If you want your tube top to be more secure, adding an elastic band at the top edge can be helpful. Measure around your bust where you want the top edge of the tube top to sit. Cut a piece of elastic with this measurement, minus two inches for a snug fit.
Using a safety pin, thread the elastic through the open casing created by leaving that extra inch of space when sewing the side seam. Once threaded all the way through, hand-sew the two ends of elastic together.
Step 6: Finishing touches
Turn your tube top right-side out and try it on. If everything fits as desired, you can sew shut any remaining openings in the casing where you threaded your elastic. You now have a stylish and comfortable DIY tube top that you’ve created yourself!
In conclusion, making your own tube top is not only easy but also fun, as it allows you to express your creativity and style in a unique way. With materials and basic sewing skills in hand, you can now create trendy tube tops personalized to your liking with minimal effort. Happy sewing!
