How to Make a Top Hat: 12 Steps

Introduction:

A top hat is a classic accessory that has remained popular throughout history. From classy magicians to steampunk aficionados, the top hat is still an iconic piece of fashion. Making your own top hat can be a fun and rewarding project. In this article, we’ll walk you through 12 steps to create your very own top hat.

Materials:

– Cardboard or poster board

– Fabric (velvet, felt or other material)

– Scissors

– Pencil

– Ruler

– Hot glue gun and glue sticks

– Ribbon or trim (optional)

– Decorative items (such as feathers, beads, buttons etc., optional)

Step 1: Measure your head circumference

Using a soft measuring tape, measure the circumference of your head at the widest point. This will help ensure that your top hat fits comfortably.

Step 2: Create the brim template

Using your head measurement as a guide, draw a circle on the cardboard with an approximate diameter of 2 inches more than the head circumference, then cut it out. Next, draw a smaller circle in the center of this circle (the same size as your head measurement), and cut that out.

Step 3: Cut out the brim

Use the brim template to trace and cut out the brim of your hat onto your chosen fabric. Cut two fabric circles with the same dimensions as your cardboard template.

Step 4: Attach fabric to cardboard brim

Using a hot glue gun, attach one fabric circle to each side of the cardboard cutout, ensuring it is centered and smooth. Trim any excess fabric.

Step 5: Create the top template

Measure the desired height of your top hat crown and draw a circle on cardboard with that diameter using the size of the inner hole in your brim. Cut out this circle.

Step 6: Cut out the top

Use the top template to trace and cut two fabric circles for the hat’s top.

Step 7: Attach fabric to cardboard top

As with the brim, use a hot glue gun to attach fabric circles to both sides of the cardboard top, making sure they are centered and smooth. Trim any excess fabric.

Step 8: Create the side template

Using your ruler, draw a rectangle on your cardboard that matches the circumference of your hat’s top circle and desired height of your hat. Cut it out.

Step 9: Cut out the hat’s side

Trace and cut the same sized rectangle onto your fabric selection.

Step 10: Attach fabric to cardboard side

With a hot glue gun, glue the fabric rectangle onto the cardboard and trim any excess material.

Step 11: Assemble the hat

Using hot glue, attach one long edge of your side piece to the inside edge of your brim cutout circle. Work around until you reach the starting point again. Then, attach the remaining edge of your side piece to close off the cylinder shape. Finally, glue the top fabric-covered cardboard circle onto this cylinder.

Step 12: Customize and decorate (optional)

Finally, you can embellish your top hat with ribbon or trim around the brim and base of the crown. Additionally, you may add decorative items such as feathers, beads or buttons according to personal preference.

Conclusion:

Following these steps will allow you to create a unique, handmade top hat that fits perfectly and showcases your personality. Although it may seem complex at first, with practice and creativity anyone can master this skill. Enjoy crafting your custom top hat masterpiece!
