How to Make a Plastic Bag Holder

Introduction
Whether you are environmentally conscious or just tired of a cluttered kitchen, repurposing plastic bags is an efficient method to reduce waste and keep your space organized. A handy plastic bag holder is the perfect solution, and you can easily create one using simple household materials. In this article, we will guide you through a step-by-step process on how to make a DIY plastic bag holder.
Materials Needed
1. Fabric (40″ x 20″) – You can use any type of fabric, but cotton works best.
2. Elastic bands (¼” wide) – Two pieces, one measuring 8″ and the other 4″.
3. Thread that matches your fabric
4. Sewing machine or needle for hand sewing
5. Pins
6. Safety pin
7. Scissors
8. Measuring tape
Instructions
1. Prepare the fabric: First, choose a fabric that matches the décor of your kitchen or any room where you want to hang the holder. Wash, dry, and iron it before proceeding.
2. Cut the fabric: Using the measuring tape and scissors, cut the fabric into a rectangle measuring 40″ (length) by 20″ (width).
3. Fold and pin the edges: Fold in about ½ inch on both short sides of the rectangle with the wrong side facing up and then fold in another ½ inch for each side to conceal raw edges. Pin these folded sides in place.
4. Sew the short sides: Using either a sewing machine or hand sewing, stitch along each folded edge, about ⅓ inch from the edge, removing pins as you sew.
5. Create casings for elastic bands: Fold in about 1 inch on both long sides of the rectangle with the wrong side facing up to create two casings for your elastic bands.
6. Sew the casings: Stitch along the folded edges, about ¾ inch from the edge, leaving both ends open.
7. Insert elastic bands: Slip a safety pin through one end of each elastic band to help you thread it through the casings. Attach the safety pin at one end of the casing and work it through to the other. Repeat this process for both casings. Once both ends of each elastic band are outside the casings, stretch them out to create an even gathering on both sides of your fabric.
8. Secure elastic bands: Overlap each pair of elastic band ends by about ½ inch on either side, and stitch them securely. Make sure to backstitch a few times for added strength.
9. Sew the long edges together: Fold your fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing each other so that two short sewn edges line up, and pin them together along the side with no elastic. Sew along this edge with a ½ inch seam allowance, making sure not to catch any part of the elastic bands in your seam.
10. Turn right side out: Turn your holder right-side-out by pulling it through one of its openings. Use your fingers or a pointed object like a pencil to push out the corners.
11. Hang and fill your plastic bag holder: Find a convenient location
