How to Make a Petticoat
A petticoat is a versatile garment that can be worn under a dress or skirt to add volume, shape, and style. Whether you want to achieve the perfect silhouette or give a vintage-inspired look to your outfit, making your own petticoat can be a rewarding and fun project. In this article, we’ll explore a step-by-step guide on how to make a petticoat.
Materials and Tools You’ll Need:
1. Fabric (preferably tulle or soft netting)
2. Elastic waistband
3. Sewing machine
4. Scissors
5. Measuring tape
6. Pins
Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Fabric
Start by measuring the length of fabric you’ll need for your petticoat. Ideally, your petticoat should reach from your waist to the desired length of your skirt or dress. After determining the length, multiply it by two — this will provide enough fabric for two layers of the petticoat.
Next, cut two pieces of fabric with these measurements. These will be the body of the petticoat.
Step 2: Sew the Layers Together
Place one layer of fabric on top of the other with the right sides together (the more vibrant sides facing each other). Pin along the sides, leaving about an inch open at the top for attaching the elastic later.
Sew along both sides, using a straight stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch if you’re using tulle fabric as it tends to fray easily.
Step 3: Hemming
Turn one layer of fabric up about half an inch and pin it down for hemming. Repeat on the other side with another layer of fabric. Sew both hemlines using a straight stitch.
Step 4: Gathering
You’ll want to create some volume in your petticoat, so gently gather the fabric by hand or by using a gathering foot on your sewing machine if available. You can use a long, straight stitch to sew along the top edge of the fabric, pulling the threads afterward to create gathers.
Step 5: Measure and Cut Elastic
Take your measuring tape and measure around your waist where you want the petticoat to sit. Cut the elastic to this measurement, ensuring it is snug but comfortable.
Step 6: Attach Elastic Waistband
Sew the ends of the elastic together with a zigzag stitch, then insert the elastic into the open space left at the top of the petticoat. Pin the elastic evenly to ensure it properly distributes the fabric.
Finally, sew around the edge of your petticoat just below the elastic band by using a straight stitch or narrow zigzag stitch on tulle.
Step 7: Finishing Touches
Once you have secured your waistband, trim any loose threads and try on your petticoat! Pair it with a dress or skirt to see how it adds volume and shape to your outfit.
Congratulations! You’ve learned how to make a petticoat from scratch. Remember, you can customize this project by adjusting its length or using different colors and materials, making it unique to your personal style.
