How to Make a Monkey Costume
Dressing up as a monkey can be a fun and creative way to express your love for these playful creatures. Whether you’re planning a costume party, attending a Halloween gathering, or getting ready for a school play, making your own monkey costume is an affordable and unique option. Follow these simple steps to create your very own monkey costume and swing into the fun!
Materials Needed:
1. Brown or gray hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants
2. Brown or gray fabric (fleece or felt) for ears and tail
3. Cardboard or foam sheets
4. White fabric (felt) for face details
5. Fabric glue or hot glue gun
6. Scissors
7. Safety pins
8. Black marker
Step 1: Gather Your Outfit
To start your monkey costume, gather a brown or gray hooded sweatshirt and matching sweatpants. These will serve as the base of your costume and provide the monkey color scheme.
Step 2: Cut Out Monkey Ears
Next, cut two large oval pieces from the brown or gray fabric (about 4 inches long by 3 inches wide). Fold each piece in half, making sure the folded side faces inward to form the ear shape. Use fabric glue or hot glue gun to secure it in place.
Step 3: Create Inner Ear Detail
Cut out two smaller ovals from white felt that are about half the size of your brown/gray ovals. With your black marker, draw two curved lines to make the inner ear detail on each white oval piece.
Step 4: Attach Ears to Hoodie
Glue the white inner ear detail onto the corresponding brown/gray ear pieces you’ve created in step 2. Then, attach the finished ears to the sides of your hoodie using fabric glue or hot glue gun, ensuring they are securely in place.
Step 5: Make a Monkey Tail
Using your brown or gray fabric, cut out a long strip that’s about three feet long and two inches wide. Twist the material to create a slight curl resembling a monkey’s tail. If you’re using fleece or another stretchy fabric, make sure to stretch the fabric as you twist for better results.
Step 6: Attach Tail to Sweatpants
Secure the base of your tail to the back of your sweatpants using safety pins or by sewing it in place.
Step 7: Create Face Details
To add some character to your monkey costume, cut out two large white circles and two smaller black circles from your white and black felt. Glue the smaller black circles onto the white circles to create monkey eyes and attach them to your hoodie using fabric glue or hot glue gun.
Optional: If you want to take your costume a step further, consider adding a rubber banana prop for added fun.
With these simple steps, you’ve successfully created your very own monkey costume! Get ready to have a swinging good time at any event wearing this fun and easy-to-make outfit.
