How to Make a Kite: 14 Steps

Step 1: Gather materials
To begin making your kite, gather the following materials: paper or lightweight cloth, wooden dowels, string, a ruler, a pencil, scissors, glue, and a hole punch or needle.
Step 2: Choose a kite design
Select your preferred kite design. Some popular designs include diamond, box, and sled styles.
Step 3: Measure and cut the sail
Measure and cut the paper or lightweight cloth according to your chosen kite design. Leaving some margin on every side is recommended for later adjustments.
Step 4: Reinforce the edges
Fold over the edges of the sail and secure them with glue, creating a strong and durable border.
Step 5: Create the kite’s frame
Prepare the wooden dowels by cutting them to fit your kite’s design. For a diamond-shaped kite, you’ll need two dowels that cross in an “X” shape at the center of the sail.
Step 6: Attach dowels to the sail
Securely fix the dowels to your sail using glue or tape. For added stability, create brackets from paper or cloth strips in order to attach securely.
Step 7: Add reinforcements
Add additional strips of paper or cloth at the point where the dowels intersect. This step will provide added support for your kite’s structure.
Step 8: Make holes for string attachment
Use a hole punch or needle to create small holes where you will attach the string to your kite (usually at each corner/edge). Take care not to tear the material when making these holes
Step 9: Create a bridle (support strings)
Cut three pieces of string – one for each attachment point on your kite. Tie these strings securely through each hole on your kite’s sail. Then tie them together at one central point known as bridle loop.
Step 10: Attach the flying line
Attach the end of your main flying line to the bridle loop (centre) of your kite using a simple or a slip knot.
Step 11: Make a tail
Cut a long strip of paper or cloth that will act as your kite’s tail. This step is important, as it helps balance your kite in the air. Decorate or add weight to the tail as needed.
Step 12: Attach the tail
Securely attach the tail by tying it to the bottom part of your kite’s frame using string. Make sure that it doesn’t interfere with the other strings.
Step 13: Check your kite
Inspect your assembled kite for any loose strings or uneven points. Adjust as necessary.
Step 14: Take it for a test flight
Choose a location with plenty of space and steady winds to test your new homemade kite. Launch it into the air and enjoy watching it soar!
