How to Make a Hula Skirt
A hula skirt is a fun, traditional Hawaiian garment worn by dancers during the hula, a Polynesian dance form. Whether you’re getting ready for a Hawaiian-themed party or simply want to learn a new craft, making your own hula skirt can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of creating a hula skirt from various materials.
Materials You Can Use:
- Raffia or natural materials
- Plastic tablecloth or plastic trash bags
- Fabric (such as lightweight grass-like material)
Here’s how to make a DIY hula skirt in detail:
Step 1: Measure your waist
Using a measuring tape, measure your waist where you’d like the hula skirt to sit. Be sure to add an extra 2 inches for tying the skirt in place.
Step 2: Prepare the base of your skirt
For your base material, consider using one of the following:
– A wide ribbon
– A long strip of fabric
Cut your chosen base material according to your waist measurement plus the additional 2 inches from Step 1.
Step 3: Choose your main material and cut appropriate lengths
Select one of the materials we mentioned earlier (raffia, plastic or fabric) for your ingredient. Based on your desired length, cut individual strands that are double the desired finished length of your skirt.
Step 4: Attach strands to the base
Begin at one end of your base material and fold one strand of your main material in half. Place it at the backside of the base with a loop at the folded end. Then pull both open ends through this loop and pull tightly to secure it in place. Repeat this process with all other strands, placing them closely together along the entire length of the base.
Step 5: Tie the hula skirt
Once all strands are attached, wrap the skirt around your waist and tie it securely, allowing for a snug fit. Alternatively, use Velcro or a safety pin to fasten the ends together.
Step 6: Customize (Optional)
If you’d like to add more flair, you can accessorize your hula skirt with shells, flowers or ribbons for a festive touch.
Now that your homemade hula skirt is complete, you’re ready to dance the night away at your Luau party or take on the steps of the traditional Hawaiian hula dance. Enjoy showing off your new attire and don’t forget to ʻAloha!
