How to Make a Hemp Necklace

The popularity of hemp necklaces has seen a revival in recent years, largely due to their earthy, eco-friendly aesthetic and natural durability. In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating your own hemp necklace from scratch.

Materials Needed:

1. Hemp cord or twine (1mm-2mm thickness)

2. Beads with at least 3mm holes

3. Scissors

4. Tape or clipboard

5. Optional: pendant or charm

Step 1: Cut the hemp cord

Start by cutting two pieces of hemp cord, one approximately twice the desired length of your necklace, and another piece four times the length. For example, if you want your necklace to be 20 inches long, cut one piece of cord at 40 inches and another at 80 inches.

Step 2: Fold cords in half

Next, fold both cords in half, forming a loop at the center point of each piece. Align these loops together with the longer cord sitting behind the shorter one.

Step 3: Secure the cords

To secure your cords while working on your necklace, use tape or a clipboard to fasten them to a hard surface. Position them in such a way that the shorter cords are on the outside and longer ones are in the center.

Step 4: Begin knotting

You will utilize square knots for making your necklace. Starting on either side (typically left), take the outermost short cord and pass it over both center cords and below the opposite short cord (on the right). Then take the right outermost short cord and pass it below both center cords and up through the loop created by previous step.

Now, pull both outer short cords tightly to complete one half of your square knot. Repeat this process from the opposite side to complete a full square knot.

Step 5: Repeat knotting

Continue creating square knots along the desired length of your necklace. For beginners, it is recommended that you make a simple chain of knots without beads. More advanced crafters may prefer to include beads in their design by threading them onto the center cords between knots.

Step 6: Add a charm or pendant (optional)

To incorporate a pendant or charm into your necklace, simply suspend it on one (or both) of the center cords beneath a completed square knot.

Step 7: Finish the necklace

Once you’ve reached your desired necklace length, tie off the last square knot by pulling tightly on all four cords. Trim the ends of the shorter cords as close to the final knot as possible. The longer cords can either be knotted near the ends to create an adjustable closure or tied into loops to accommodate a clasp.

And there you have it – your very own custom-made hemp necklace! Not only does this craft produce a beautiful, unique accessory, but it is also an environmentally friendly and sustainable choice. Try experimenting with various colors of hemp cord, bead styles, and charms to create a collection that suits your personal style.
