A gravel garden can be a visually appealing and low-maintenance addition to your outdoor space. With its simplicity and unique texture, it offers a fresh alternative to traditional garden designs. Creating a gravel garden is an easy project that can be achieved in just a few steps. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create your own gravel garden.

1. Plan your gravel garden: Decide on the location, size, and shape of your garden. Consider elements such as sun exposure, drainage, and how it will fit within your existing landscape.

2. Choose the right plants: Select drought-tolerant and sun-loving plants that suit the gravel environment. Examples of suitable plants for a gravel garden include lavender, sedum, and ornamental grasses.

3. Sketch your design: Create a rough design of your gravel garden on paper or using an app. This will help you visualize your final outcome and make adjustments as needed.

4. Mark the area: Use rope or spray paint to clearly outline the boundaries of your planned gravel garden.

5. Remove existing vegetation: Dig up any grass, weeds, or plants from within the marked area. This will provide a clean slate for your new gravel environment.

6. Improve soil drainage: To ensure proper water runoff in the space, mix in coarse sand or compost with the existing soil.

7. Install edging material: Place a perimeter of edging material around the border of the garden to keep the gravel contained and create an attractive contrast with any neighboring gardens or lawns.

8. Apply landscape fabric: Lay down landscape fabric within the boundaries of your marked area to act as a barrier between the soil and gravel layer—this helps prevent weed growth in your garden.

9. Calculate gravel requirements: Take measurements of both length and width of the space to determine how much gravel you will need based on an average depth of 2 to 3 inches.

10. Purchase gravel: Choose a suitable type and color of gravel that complements your garden design. Pea gravel, crushed stones, or lava rocks are popular choices.

11. Spread gravel: Fill the garden with the purchased gravel, spreading it evenly over the landscape fabric and ensuring a consistent depth throughout the space.

12. Plant your selections: Dig holes in the appropriate spots through the landscape fabric and plant your chosen species—remember to arrange them according to their size, shape, and color for a visually appealing result.

13. Maintain your gravel garden: Keep an eye on weed growth and regularly remove any that sprout up through the landscape fabric.

Prune plants as needed, and add more gravel when necessary to maintain the desired depth and appearance.
By following these 13 easy steps, you’ll create a beautiful and durable gravel garden that can be enjoyed for seasons to come!
