How to Make a Fanny Pack
Fanny packs, also known as hip packs or waist bags, have made an astounding comeback in recent years as a versatile and stylish accessory. Whether you’re heading to a weekend festival, going for a walk, or travelling, these compact essentials are not only convenient, but they also add a trendy touch to your outfit. In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating your very own custom fanny pack, so grab your materials and let’s get started!
Materials Needed:
- Fabric of your choice (at least 1 yard)
- Zipper (8-12 inches long)
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Chalk or fabric marker
- Webbing strap (40-50 inches long)
- Side-release buckle
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Measure and Cut Fabric Pieces: Begin by measuring two rectangular pieces of fabric that are approximately 14″ x 7″. These rectangles will be the main body of your fanny pack. You’ll also need two smaller rectangular pieces measuring 2″ x 4″ that will serve as the sides.
2. Add Zipper: Place the right sides of the two main fabric pieces together, sandwiching the zipper in between them along one of the longer edges. Align the zipper with the top edge of the fabric and secure it in place with pins before stitching along its length.
3. Sew Sides: Attach each side piece to one end of the fanny pack’s body by first aligning their shorter edge with the zipper’s ends, right sides together. Pin these edges firmly in place before sewing.
4. Assemble Fanny Pack: Turn your work inside out, hiding any raw edges within the bag itself. Now fold your assembled fanny pack in half lengthwise, rights sides facing in and align the top edges of the side panels with the opposite side of your fanny pack’s body. Using pins to secure their placement, sew along each edge.
5. Prepare Webbing: Cut two pieces of webbing, one approximately 10″ long and the other at least 30″ long depending on your preference. Attach the female buckle part to the shorter strap by threading the end through the buckle and folding it back onto itself. Sew a square with an “X” through it to hold the buckle in place securely. Repeat this process on one end of the longer strap, this time attaching the male buckle part.
6. Add Straps: Take your side pieces’ free end and fold it slightly outward from the bag’s body, creating a loop that can accommodate your webbing straps. Insert the unattached end of each strap through their respective loops before folding them back onto themselves and sewing along their edges as done previously when attaching buckles.
7. Final Touches: Turn your fanny pack right side out and adjust your straps accordingly to find a comfortable fit around your waist or hips.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully created a stylish and functional fanny pack! With this versatile accessory, you’ll be ready for any adventure while keeping all your essentials organized and within reach. Customize your new fanny pack using different fabrics, zippers, or embellishments to create a unique look that suits your personal style. Enjoy showing off your handmade creation as you explore the world!
