How to Make a Box Knot Scoubidou
Scoubidou, also known as boondoggle or gimp, is a colorful plastic craft that has been popular among children and adults alike for decades. One of the most iconic scoubidou knots is the box knot. This guide will take you through the step-by-step process to create your very own box knot scoubidou.
Materials:
- Two different colored strands of scoubidou (preferably 2-3 feet long)
- Scissors
- Keyring, carabiner, or lanyard clip (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Strands
To begin, select two different colored strands of scoubidou. Fold each strand in half and find the center point; this will be where you begin your box knot.
Step 2: Cross the Strands
Place one scoubidou strand horizontally in front of you, with its looped end facing left and its loose ends facing right. Lay the second strand vertically on top of the first with its looped end facing towards you and the loose ends pointing away from you. The strands should now resemble a cross.
Step 3: Weave the First Knot
Starting from the bottom left strand (also known as Strand A), fold it over Strand B (the top vertical strand) and under Strand C (the bottom vertical strand). Next, take Strand D (the upper left horizontal strand), fold it over Strand C and under Strand B.
Step 4: Weave the Second Knot
Now working with Strand B, fold it over Strand D and under Strand A. Following this, fold Strand C over Strand A and under Strand D. Gently tug on all four loose ends to tighten your first box knot.
Step 5: Repeat the Weaving Process
Continue weaving by taking Strand A over Strand B and under Strand C, then Strand D over Strand C and under Strand B. Keep repeating these steps, making sure to alternate the direction of your weave each time. This will create the signature box knot pattern.
Step 6: Finishing Off
When your scoubidou is the desired length, trim any excess scoubidou from the loose ends, leaving about half an inch of material. Fold the strands under to create small loops and pull tightly to secure the last box knot in place.
(Optional) Step 7: Attach a Keyring or Clip
For a functional accessory, attach a keyring, carabiner, or lanyard clip to one end of your scoubidou. To do so, simply thread it through the loop created at the beginning of your project before weaving your first knot.
Now that you’ve mastered the box knot scoubidou technique, you can explore other weaving patterns and craft a range of unique accessories. Let your creativity flow as you mix and match scoubidou colors and experiment with various lengths for personalized gifts and mementos.
