How to Make a Beret
A beret is a timeless fashion accessory that can be worn by people of all ages. This classic round cap has been donned by everyone from fashionistas to artists and military personnel. Making a beret at home is not as difficult as it may seem. In this article, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to make a beret.
Materials you will need:
1. Fabric: Choose a fabric that is soft but sturdy. Wool or wool-blend fabrics work best for traditional berets, but felt or other heavier fabrics can also be used.
2. Lining: A lightweight fabric for the inside of the beret that provides added comfort.
3. Pattern paper: To create your pattern pieces.
4. Tape measure
5. Scissors
6. Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
7. Elastic or drawstring
8. Pins or fabric clips
Step 1: Measure and Create the Pattern
First, measure the circumference of your head where you want the beret to sit – usually about an inch above eyebrows and around the widest part of your skull.
Next, translate these measurements onto your pattern paper.
1. Draw a circle with a diameter equal to your head circumference divided by 3.14 (pi). This circle will be the top of your beret.
2. For the band of the beret, create a rectangle with the length equal to your head circumference and the width about 2-3 inches (depending on how wide you want your band).
3. Lastly, draw another circle with a diameter smaller than the first one by about 1 inch for the lower crown.
Step 2: Cut Your Fabric
Lay out your fabric and fold it in half so that its wrong sides are facing each other.
Using the patterns you created in Step 1, pin them onto your fabric and cut out:
1. Two circles (one for the top of the beret and one for the lower crown)
2. Two rectangles for the band (one from your main fabric and one from your lining fabric)
Step 3: Sew the Lower Crown and Top Circle
With right sides together, pin the large circle piece to the small circle piece along their perimeters. Then, using a straight stitch, sew along their curved edges, with a ½ inch seam allowance.
Step 4: Assemble and Sew the Band
Now take your two rectangle pieces and sew them together on their short sides (right sides facing each other) to create a loop.
Then, attach the elastic or drawstring to the lining layer by sewing a “channel” around its top edge. Leave about 1/4 inch open so that you can insert your elastic or drawstring through later.
Step 5: Attach Everything Together
Turn the lower crown/top-circle assembly inside out so that the right sides are facing outward. Insert this assembly into the band loop, aligning the bottom edge with the raw edge of your main fabric.
Pin or clip together and sew around their joined edge with a straight stitch and a ½ inch seam allowance.
Step 6: Finish and Press
Trim any excess fabric from seams and turn right side out. Insert your elastic or drawstring through its channel, adjusting for fit as needed.
Finally, press your beret with an iron to create smooth edges and remove any wrinkles.
You have now created a beautiful handmade beret! Wear it with pride, as you’ve successfully turned some simple materials into fashionable headwear perfect for any occasion.
