How to Make a Ball Jointed Doll

Ball jointed dolls (BJDs) have grown increasingly popular among collectors and artists for their remarkable flexibility, unique designs, and endless customization possibilities. If you’ve ever been curious about making your own BJD, follow this step-by-step guide to create a stunning, one-of-a-kind doll.
1. Design your doll
Before you begin sculpting, sketch out a detailed design for your BJD. Determine its height, body proportions, clothing and any specific customization you want to incorporate. This blueprint will act as your reference while crafting the doll’s individual parts.
2. Choose your materials
Popular materials for creating BJDs are polymer clay or air-dry clay. Both options are relatively easy to work with and allow for extensive detail work. You’ll also need materials like sandpaper, wire, hooks, and elastic cords for assembling the final product.
3. Sculpt the parts
Follow your design sketch and begin sculpting each part of the doll separately: head, torso, legs, arms, and hands. For added flexibility and realism, some artists split limbs into more pieces (such as upper leg and lower leg). Ensure that the separate sections of limbs have channels for accommodating elastic cords required at assembly stage.
4. Smooth and refine
Once you’ve sculpted all the parts required for your BJD, use tools like sandpaper or needle files to smooth out rough edges and refine details on your sculpture.
5. Make molds
Create silicone molds for each separate piece of your doll in order to cast them later in resin. Ensure all undercuts are filled to get a perfect cast of each part.
6. Cast in resin
Prepare polyester or polyurethane resin according to the manufacturer’s instructions and pour into each mold. Allow enough time for curing following recommendations of the resin manufacturer before demolding the parts.
7. Sand and finish
Remove any imperfections like air bubbles or seam lines created during the casting process through sanding and polishing. This will give your BJD a professional, polished look.
8. Assemble the doll
Use wire, hooks, and elastic cords to connect the various pieces of your BJD together. Be sure to leave enough slack in the elastic cords so that your doll has full range of motion.
9. Paint and customize
Using acrylic paints or pastels, paint the face and body of your BJD to bring it to life. Optionally, you can also use wigs, clothing, and accessories to further personalize your creation.
10. Seal the doll
Finally, apply a varnish or sealant specifically designed for dolls to protect your finished masterpiece from dust, moisture, and general wear.
Congratulations! You have successfully crafted a unique ball jointed doll from scratch. With practice and creativity, the possibilities are truly endless as you continue exploring this beautiful art form.
