How to Lube Your Mechanical Keyboard Switches: The Traditional Way vs. the “Easy” Way

Mechanical keyboards have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their durability, customizability, and tactile feel. However, like any other piece of equipment, mechanical keyboards require maintenance to ensure their longevity and optimal performance. One key aspect of keyboard maintenance is lubrication of the switches. In this article, we will discuss the traditional way of lubricating your mechanical keyboard switches, as well as a newer, easier method.

The Traditional Way

The traditional way of lubricating mechanical keyboard switches involves removing each switch from the keyboard and applying a small amount of lubricant onto the contact points of the switch. This process is time-consuming and requires a fair bit of technical knowledge, as it involves soldering and desoldering the switches from the keyboard PCB. If done incorrectly, this method can potentially damage your keyboard beyond repair. However, the traditional method also has its benefits. By lubricating each switch, you have complete control over the amount of lubricant applied, which can result in a more customized feel and sound.

The “Easy” Way

The newer, easier method of lubricating mechanical keyboard switches involves a pre-lubricated switch. These switches, such as those from brands like Gateron and Kailh, come pre-lubricated with a thin layer of grease or oil, eliminating the need for manual lubrication. This method is much simpler and requires no technical knowledge, making it accessible to even the most inexperienced keyboard enthusiasts. However, some argue that pre-lubricated switches may have a more generic feel and sound, as they are not customized to your specific preferences.

Which Method is best?

Ultimately, the decision of which method to use comes down to personal preference and technical ability. If you have experience in soldering and desoldering switches, the traditional method may be the best option for you as it allows for complete control over the lubrication process. If you are new to keyboard maintenance or do not feel comfortable with the technical aspects of traditional lubrication, pre-lubricated switches may be the better choice for you.

Conclusion

Proper lubrication of your mechanical keyboard switches is essential for maintaining their performance and durability. While the traditional method of lubrication allows for greater customization, it requires technical knowledge and experience. The newer, easier method of using pre-lubricated switches may be more accessible to beginners or those without the necessary technical expertise. Ultimately, the decision of which method to use is up to personal preference and ability.
