How to Lay a Turf Lawn: 15 Steps
1. Measure and prepare the area: Before purchasing or laying turf, carefully measure the area where you will be installing it. Make adjustments to its shape if necessary to ensure that it’s regular and easy to manage.
2. Choose the right turf: Select a turf grass species that is suitable for your climate, soil conditions, and desired level of maintenance.
3. Remove existing grass and weeds: Completely remove any existing vegetation from the area, either by using a shovel or through chemical treatments.
4. Grade the soil: Level and smooth the soil surface so that it slopes slightly away from any structures on your property, like houses or fences.
5. Improve the soil quality: Depending on your specific conditions, you may need to amend your soil by adding organic matter, such as compost, peat moss, or sand. This will improve drainage and fertility.
6. Cultivate and aerate the soil: Use a rototiller or garden fork to loosen the top several inches of soil. This ensures good air circulation and helps with root establishment.
7. Install irrigation system (optional): If you plan on installing an irrigation system, do it before laying the turf. Make sure it’s properly installed and tested for efficiency.
8. Rake the ground: Go over the prepared area with a rake to work in any amendments you’ve added and create a smooth, level surface for your turf.
9. Order your turf: Calculate how much turf grass you’ll need based on your measurements, then contact a supplier to order it fresh-cut.
10. Lay the turf as soon as possible: Arrange to have your turf delivered on or very close to the day you plan on laying it. Starting in a straight edge or corner, unroll each piece tightly against one another without overlapping or stretching it out of shape.
11. Stagger strips like bricks: Lay each row of turf so that the seams between adjacent pieces do not line up, similar to how bricks are stacked in a wall. This helps establish a more natural look.
12. Trim any excess turf: Use a sharp knife or edging tool to trim around the boundaries of the lawn and any obstacles, like trees or garden beds.
13. Roll the newly installed turf: Using a lawn roller, lightly roll over the turf to eliminate any air pockets and ensure proper contact between the turf and soil.
14. Water your new lawn immediately: Following installation, generously water your new turf. For the first two weeks, water daily—more frequently during hot weather—to encourage root establishment.
15. Mow and maintain your lawn: After two to three weeks, when roots are well-established, begin mowing your new lawn regularly, being careful not to trim too short. After this initial period, follow routine lawn care practices—including regular watering, fertilizing, and weed control—to ensure a lush, healthy turf lawn for years to come.
